I Sampling rate, given in samples per second (or hertz [Hz], which means the same thing) Most common audio files deliver sampled audio (with the notable exception of MIDI), which means that they represent sound waves by a series of numbers, called samples The more samples recorded per second, the higher the quality and fidelity of the sound file A sample rate of 44,100 Hz is considered CD quality I Sample depth (in bits per sample, such as 8, 16, or 32) The more bits per sample, the more closely the sample represents the original (or intended) sound wave, and the higher the audio quality

The typical steps in putting sound recordings on the Web whether they are in static or streaming format are the following: 1 Capture the audio with a recording device, such as a cassette, minidisc, or digital audio tape (DAT) 2 Generate an uncompressed audio file on your computer by using its sound card 3 (Optional) Edit and process the uncompressed audio 4 Encode the file into a different audio format, which usually compresses the file size in the process 5 Load the resulting audio onto your web server and add links to the audio files from your web pages

The secret to creating successful web audio is to start with a good, clean recording The following pointers can help you to get your digital audio project off to a good start I Always obtain rights to post your recording Don t just ask May I record your speech Instead, be specific: ask May I have your permission to place a recording of your speech on my organization s web site You would retain copyright, and I ll note that on the web page Written releases are even better Obtaining permission to use a recording for one purpose doesn t necessarily give you rights to use it for other purposes Even though you may be making nonprofit use of a recording, you are still subject to copyright laws Be especially careful when posting music on the Web because performers, composers, and publishers may all have rights to grant I Don t rely on post-processing to clean up recording deficiencies If the original recording is muddled, distorted, or noisy, a good final product may be impossible to obtain
