ActiveX is a technology called an application programming interface (API) that enables web developers to write small (or not so small) Windows programs that are invoked from web pages in a browser As a web page creator, you can use ActiveX features by using special terms within JavaScript or VBScript, similar to the terms used to invoke a Java applet Microsoft s ActiveX Control Pad is an authoring tool that lets developers add ActiveX controls and features (as well as JavaScript and VBScript code) In principle, you could write ActiveX programs for Macintosh, UNIX, or other systems, but in practice ActiveX is only available on Windows ActiveX has security problems not present in Java because ActiveX programs have full access to Windows, so a buggy or malicious program can delete files, install viruses, or otherwise damage a user s computer For more information about ActiveX controls, see Microsoft s developers web site at msdnmicrosoftcom

An alternative to putting a program (a script or Java applet) in a web page is to store the program on the web server and run the program from a command in the web page Server-side programs are essential, for instance, if you want your visitors to be able to enter data in a central database or to read data from that database Pages that use forms for registering, signing in, or placing orders run a server program to do those tasks In fact, the original intent of forms, and still one of the most common uses for forms, is to gather information and pass that information to a server program (Today, forms may also be used in conjunction with browser-side programs) For some web applications, you need one program running in the browser and another on the server If the browser program is a Java applet, you can even make your web page communicate with an e-mail or chat server instead of the web server The most popular methods of running programs on the web server are the following: I CGI scripts Programs written in C, Perl, or other programming languages Codes in the web page call these programs Figure 28-1 shows what happens when a web site visitor clicks a link that calls CGI script: the web server runs the script and sends the output of the CGI script back to the browser for display

I Embedded code Another increasingly popular technique is to embed the program code to be run on the server in the web page itself, in much the same way that you embed JavaScript in web pages The most popular embedded languages are the open source PHP, Microsoft s ASP, and Macromedia s ColdFusion Microsoft s FrontPage Extensions (or WebBots) also work this way Figure 28-2 shows what happens when a web site visitor clicks a link

Embedded scripts require the web server to have extra programs installed to execute the embedded code

to a web page that contains PHP, ASP, ColdFusion CFML code, or WebBots: the web server retrieves the web page; calls on PHP, ASP, ColdFusion, or FrontPage Extensions to execute the embedded code; includes the output in the web page in place of the code; and sends the resulting web page to the browser The rest of this chapter describes how to use both of these approaches: CGI scripts and embedded scripts, including PHP, ASP, WebBots, and ColdFusion
Creating Web Pages That Run CGI Scripts
The traditional way for web pages to run your server programs is through a server feature called the Common Gateway Interface (CGI)
What Are CGI Scripts
The programs that your web page can run on the web server are called CGI scripts (The word script doesn t imply that these programs are written in web scripting languages such as JavaScript or VBScript it s just another word for program ) CGI is neither a programming language nor a program; CGI scripts are generally written in either the C or Perl programming language, although other languages can also be used to create the executable script file CGI is built into the Web s HTTP protocol for communications between browsers and web servers Creating a CGI script for a web server is harder than browser-side programming Most ISPs and web hosting companies require you to submit each CGI script to them and pay for them to review it before you (or they) install it on the server This precaution protects the web servers from running malicious scripts (or scripts with serious bugs) For most web page developers, attractive alternatives include using predesigned or preinstalled scripts that the ISP or web hosting company have already approved and installed Another alternative is to buy special tools that create the scripts for you Advantages of CGI scripts are that they can be written in C or C++ and compiled, and that they run faster than other interpreted types of scripts Another advantage is that on UNIX/Linux systems, CGI scripts can run under another user name, so that they can read and update files that aren t directly accessible to the web server
