MSN Communities is a free service offered to MSN Passport users In addition to the three megabytes of file storage space it provides, you can also use it to host a small personal web site and to create a mailing list Additional storage space can be purchased 4 If you choose MSN Communities, you see a screen to create a new community or to use an existing community, if you created one previously The next screens ask for a name and description for the community, and present options to keep the site private and unlisted in the community directory Finally, the wizard asks if you want a shortcut in Favorites 5 If you want to create a Web Folder on a network, web server, or FTP server, the process is just as easy Type in the URL or browse to find the location and add a name for the Web Folder When the wizard finishes, you see an icon for your new shortcut in the My Network Places window Figure 33-2 shows a shortcut for a user s MSN web sites and for several other web servers When you double-click the Web Folder shortcut, a window appears showing the files and folders (directories) on the web or FTP server, as shown in Figure 33-3

When you are connected to the Internet, you can add and delete files from Web Folders just as you would any other folder on your computer, using Windows Explorer commands To copy files from the server to your computer, open the Web Folder in one window, open a folder on your computer in another window, and use cut-and-paste or drag-and-drop to move files between them
Using Web Folders for Secure File Transfer
Web Folders provide a secure environment for transferring files over the Web (few FTP clients or servers support Secure Sockets Layer [SSL] or other secure systems see Logging into a Web or FTP Server later in this chapter) Web Folders, or WebDAV, is a file transfer protocol that supports secure file transfer over intranets and the Internet Web Folders protects your password and encrypted data by using SSL or Windows authentication However, you cannot encrypt the data sent to the server using Windows authentication

File Transfer by Web, FTP, and Peer-to-Peer
On the other hand, because you are putting your web pages on a web server for all the world to see, file transfer security isn t usually a big issue If it is, see the sidebar Secure FTP later in this chapter
FILE TRANSFER AND DOWNLOADING
Transferring Files Using Peer-to-Peer File Sharing Utilities
Napster made file sharing popular and easy to do, using a technique known as peer-to-peer file transfer (often abbreviated as P2P) Although Napster, KaZaA, Morpheus, Gnutella, and other peer-to-peer systems are mainly for sharing MP3s (as described in the section on peer-to-peer music services in 22), other peer-to-peer services can be used for sharing any type of file When you use a peer-to-peer program, you don t need a web site to upload your files to Instead, the peer-to-peer program on your computer connects to peer-to-peer programs running on other people s computers and transfers files directly, without passing through a server As a result, peer-to-peer programs are very popular However, most peer-to-peer programs do not provide secure access or the ability to control who downloads the files For this reason, the use of these programs is best left for music, graphics, programs, and other files that don t contain personal or corporate information Popular P2P programs include BearShare and FileNavigator, which can be found at wwwgnutelliumscom These are known as Gnutella clients because they use the Gnutella network to search for the file you want and use Gnutella s protocols for connecting to other Gnutella clients to transfer the files Gnutella clients are like a mini search engine and file transfer system in one program You use the same program both to search for and download file from other people s computers and to share your own files on the Gnutella Network When you execute a search, the Gnutella client transmits your request to everyone in your Gnutella Network, and if any other Gnutella client has anything matching your search, you can download it For example, Figure 33-4 shows a search using the keyword vacation that turned up songs, video clips, digital photos, documents, and web browser cookies with vacation in the title If you use a file sharing utility, be sure you set the options to share only specific file types and only files contained in specific folders Otherwise, you may make every file on your hard drive available to anyone using a peer-to-peer program, including private or sensitive Word documents, checkbook files, tax returns, and other files For this reason you should remove all file types from the share list except those you specifically want to share
