I You can create a new zipped folder and drag files into it I You can select a bunch of files and send them to a zipped folder To create a new zipped folder in Windows XP, choose Start | My Computer to run Windows Explorer, and browse to wherever you d like to create the new zipped folder Then select File | New | Compressed (Zipped) Folder Windows creates a zipped folder with the default name of New Compressed (Zipped) Folder; type in a new name for it and press ENTER You can then drag whatever files you d like into the new folder, and Windows automatically compresses them for you Dragging a file into a compressed folder creates a compressed copy of that file; the original file will still be wherever you had it Alternatively, you can select a number of files at once (either by CTRL-clicking individual files or by clicking the first file in a list, SHIFT-clicking the last in that list to select a range of files), right-clicking, and then selecting Send To | Compressed (Zipped) Folder Windows then creates a folder for you and automatically names it after the oldest file in the folder If that s not the name you wanted, you ll have to track it down and rename it Also note that even though it says Send To, the original files stay where they are; they are copied into a zipped folder

Accessing Files in Windows XP Zipped Folders Zipped folders act like any other folders in Windows XP; you can double-click to open them and double-click to open (some) programs within them However, many programs can t read files directly out of zipped folders; you need to drag them to a regular folder first
You can use the Up or Back buttons to browse as long as you re only on the first level of a zipped folder However, if you access a subfolder within a zipped folder, using the Up or Back buttons to browse through them may cause error messages To safely get back to your nonzipped folders, click on the folders themselves to go forward and back, not the Up and Back buttons
