The following lists the key requirements for the application: Application users will have the ability to register new accounts for themselves and log in to the application Users who are trainers are not created using the Web user interface Trainers will have the ability to create a set of athletic events for which users will be able to train Users can opt in or opt out of training for specific events at any point in time The user also will be able to select an online training advisor who will be able to monitor his or her progress and provide helpful comments along the way Once the athletic training events have been created, an individually customized set of training sessions are generated for each athletic event These represent individual date-based workout sessions that the user can follow Each individualized training session is assigned with a specific date and will be rendered with a checkbox allowing the user to check off whether he or she performed the specific training session In addition to the checkbox, the user will have an input text field to log any specific comments about the training session The online training advisor will also be able to enter comments for each training event as well as to provide guidance At all times the URL bar must reflect the page that users thinks they are on There must never be a time where the URL in the URL bar confuses the user by seeming to be out of step with the application

In a very simple sense, the application is a master-detail application where the user can edit a set of items that are related to each other in a master-detail fashion Figure 10-12 is a UML diagram that provides visual representation of the data model entities of the application A User can train for zero or more Events Independent of training for an event, a User has zero or more TrainingSessions, each of which corresponds to exactly one Event A User may have exactly one trainer, which is just a special User instance A User that is a trainer may have zero or more Users as trainees There is a UserRegistry that handles Create, Read, Update, and Delete (CRUD) operations for TrainingSession and User instances There is an EventRegistry, which handles CRUD for Event instances Code for the UserRegistry and EventRegistry classes will be shown after most of the other aspects of the trainer have been explained

The data model of the Virtual Trainer application
The Virtual Trainer application uses the following elements to implement the application architecture described in the preceding paragraph: Facelet pages and backing beans Entities representing the data model Helper classes for accessing and persisting the entities Each is described in the following sections
Facelet Pages
The Facelet pages and backing beans used by Virtual Trainer are listed next The pages are spread across four directories, including the top-level directory, also known as the Web application root The following four sub-sections explain the purpose of each file
Pages in the Web Application Root
/templatexhtml All of the other Facelet pages in the application use this page as a template client This page includes common style elements and a navigation menu that appears on the left side of every page /loginxhtml The login page, it is made much simpler through the use of a JSF 2 composite component This will be explained in more detail later in the chapter /registerxhtml Reached only by coming from the loginxhtml page, this page is used to allow new users to join the Virtual Trainer
Pages in the /user Directory
Pages in this directory are shown for all logged-in users, though some of them are not used for users who are trainers /user/allEventsxhtml Linked from the navigation menu defined in the top-level templatexhtml file, and redirected to by many actions throughout the application, this is the main page for the application It shows a list of all events in the system and offers different options based on whether the current user is a trainer or not
