To eliminate any confusion, it s important to distinguish between the class hierarchy and the server-side UI component tree hierarchy The server-side UI component tree is a representation of the component layout in a page It enables programmatic access to the components For example, the parent UI component UIForm has a method getChildren( ), which returns a List of child UI components Likewise, a UI component also has a getParent( ) method to access its immediate parent component The hierarchical nature of the component tree is how the JSF lifecycle manages all the components in one operation Recall from 3 that the Render Response phase calls a cascading set of render methods on each component in order to send back a rendered response to the client In general, during each new request, the UI component tree is constantly being altered with new values and settings based on the change in state of the UI in the client as changed by the end user or programmatically on the server The UI component tree is fully managed by the ViewHandler between requests However, it is the role of the StateManager to preserve the UI component tree in between subsequent requests It saves the complete status of the component tree using one of several different statesaving methods specified as a context parameter (javaxfacesSTATE_SAVING_METHOD) in the Web application s webxml file The different state-saving parameters are server and client The server parameter causes the application s state to be stored on the server in between requests This is the default behavior, so this needn t be explicitly specified in webxml The client parameter causes the state of the application to be saved on the client The state information is stored in the form of rendered markup, which is sent back to the client using a hidden input field For example, the source of the page sent back to the client will contain an input field such as
