Scan Pictures Using Image Capture
If your scanner came with custom scanning software, use that software in preference to Image Capture,
Scanners enable you to take printed images and convert them to digital images on your Mac The scanner must first be installed, as described in the previous section To scan a picture using Image Capture, Mac OS X s default scanning application:
as it probably is designed to make better use of your scanner s capabilities Also, you may not be able to use Image Capture

Drag across the preview to specify which part of it you want to capture Choose the scan mode, document type, and bit depth:
In the Scan Mode drop-down list, choose Flatbed for
a document or image Choose Transparency for a transparency or slide
In the Document drop-down list, choose Text, B/W Photo,
or Color Photo, as appropriate
In the Bit Depth drop-down list, choose 1 Bit for text
scanning, 8 Bits for modest-quality black-and-white or color scanning, and 16 Bits or a higher setting for higher-quality scanning The settings available depend on your scanner 24-bit scans give near-photographic quality
Choose the resolution, size, and scaling:
In the Resolution drop-down list, choose the resolution in
dots per inch (dpi) The higher the resolution, the larger the file size will be, and the more detail you will see Try 150 dpi or 300 dpi for general-purpose scans, and increase the resolution if the quality of the results is not high enough
Figure 6-2: Image Capture enables you to scan documents using many popular models of scanners
On the Source Size line, specify the source size (in inches,
centimeters, or pixels)
In the Scaling box, enter the percentage of any scaling
needed, and Image Capture will indicate the resulting size in the New Size boxes

Specify the folder, filename, and format for the document:
In the Scan To Folder drop-down list, choose the folder In the Name text box, type the name to give the file The base filename is Scan,
which is not especially helpful
In the Format drop-down list, choose the format to use: JPEG, TIFF, PNG, or PDF
JPEG provides moderate quality with variable compression and is good for web use TIFF provides full quality and widespread compatibility and is good for general use PNG provides full quality and good compatibility, but some computers cannot read PNG files PDF is great for Macs, but users of other operating systems may need to install Adobe Acrobat Reader or another PDF reader to view your scanned PDF document
In the Automatic Task drop-down list, choose the program you want to associate
with the scanned file The default choice, Preview, works well, but you may prefer to use a more powerful application (such as Adobe Photoshop) if you have one
In the Image Correction drop-down list, choose whether to use image correction:
None, Automatic, or Manual If you select Manual, Image Capture displays the Brightness, Tint, Hue, and Saturation sliders (which you drag to specify settings) and hides the Unsharp Mask, Descreening, and Backlight Correction drop-down lists
If necessary, choose further settings:
