J2ME: The Complete Reference
Connected Device Configuration (CDC) device based J2ME application interacts with a database management system (DBMS) using Java data objects and SQL statements that are embedded in the J2ME application and executed by the Java data objects Java data objects are discussed in the previous chapter This chapter continues with a detailed look at how to create an SQL statement, execute the statement, and interact with rows of data returned to the J2ME application by the DBMS in response to the request for data SQL is presented in this chapter using a practical approach Each section of the chapter focuses on common tasks used in a J2ME application rather than on SQL keywords This means you can quickly locate a routine in the chapter, then incorporate the routine directly into your J2ME component
Model Programs
Many programming styles can be used to write the data-access portion of a J2ME component Two programming styles referred to as Model A and Model B are used in this chapter to illustrate how a J2ME application can interact with a DBMS The Model A program style is used to execute SQL requests that use the execute() or executeUpdate() methods (see 9) and don t return a ResultSet The Model B program style is used to execute SQL requests that use the executeQuery() method, which returns a ResultSet Each of these is described in detail in the next two sections of this chapter Both program styles are designed to minimize the code clutter in this chapter Code clutter occurs whenever many lines of code are used in code examples, but only a few lines of code change between examples In an effort to reduce code clutter, each complete program model is presented at the beginning of the chapter One or two comments indicate where within the program model to place code segments that are used to illustrate SQL routines throughout the rest of the chapter These code segments are contained either within a try {} block or within the DownRow() method The try {} block is where the SQL statement is created and executed The DownRow() method is where the J2ME application interacts with the ResultSet Let s say that you want to update a row in a database As you ll remember from the previous chapter, the executeUpdate() method is used to execute the query, and no ResultSet is returned Therefore, you can replace the second try {} block in the Model A program with the code segment contained in the section of this chapter that shows how to update a row in the database As you ll see in the next section, the Model A program does not contain a DownRow() method because no ResultSet is returned Suppose you want to retrieve data from the database The executeQuery() method is used in this scenario The Model B program is used for this purpose because a ResultSet is returned In this case, the section of this chapter that shows how to retrieve data from a database contains two code segments The first code segment contains the query, and
