Join Two Tables
Listing 11-51 illustrates the technique used to join two tables In this example, the Customers table and the ZipCode table are identified in the FROM clause These are the tables that are being joined The WHERE clause expression identifies the Zip column from the Customers table and the ZipCode column from the ZipCode table The equal operator directs the DBMS to join rows in both the Customers table and the ZipCode table where values of the Zip column and the ZipCode column match Rows whose columns don t match are excluded from the join (see Inner and Outer Joins later in this chapter) If both columns used for the join have the same name, then a column name qualifier is used to associate the column with each table, which is discussed later in this chapter It s usually considered good practice always to use a table name or alias Once the Customers and ZipCode tables are joined, the SELECT statement references column names of both tables to be returned in the ResultSet In this example, City, State, and ZipCode columns are in the ZipCode table, and the FirstName and LastName columns are in the Customers table Listing 11-51 uses the executeQuery() method to execute the query Therefore, you ll need to use the Model B program to run this example Listing 11-52 contains the DownRow() method that extracts and displays data from the ResultSet

Parent-Child Join
A parent-child join is used to join tables that have a parent-child relationship This means rows in the parent table must exist for rows in the child table to exist, which is illustrated in Listing 11-53 In this example, the Products table and Orders table are joined using the product number value Only rows that have a matching product number in both tables are placed in the virtual table that consists of rows from both tables The Products table is the parent table in this relationship because an order cannot be placed without a product appearing in the Products table Basically, a customer cannot order a product that doesn t exist in the Products table Listing 11-53 is executed using the executeQuery() method and therefore returns a ResultSet This means that you must use the Model B program to run this code segment Listing 11-54 contains the DownRow() method that retrieves and displays values from the ResultSet
