indicating there are no qualifiers for a field However, attributes are hints to the underlying VM This means that the VM can ignore attributes if it does not support them As mentioned earlier, an extended field is a field that is not explicitly predefined, but has a field ID assigned to it by a vendor s specific PIM list Extended fields are not included in the standard named fields in the API For example, a vendor-specific contact database may have a field called MOTHER_IN_LAW You can determine whether a field is a vendor-specific extended field by comparing the field s value against MIN_EXTENDED_FIELD_VALUE; a field greater than that constant is a field specific to a particular vendor s database Methods used to interact with a named field are also used to interact with an extended field A category is a string item that may correspond to category values already existing in the PIMItem s associated PIMList The Quick Reference Guide at the end of the chapter contains methods used with this interface We ll discuss a few of the commonly used methods here Your application can place values into a field by calling one of several addXXX() methods A field is similar to a Vector in that it can store more than one value, and those values are stored in a logical array These fields are setBinary(int fieldID, byte[] data), setDate(int fieldID, long value), setInt(int fieldID, int value), and setString(int fieldID, String value) Each method requires two parameters The first parameter is the field ID of the field receiving the value The other parameter is reference to the data being placed into the field Once data is placed into fields of a PIM item, you must call the commit() method to persist the data You call one of the getXXX() methods to retrieve the value of a field These are getBinary(int field, int index), getDate(int fielded, int index), getInt(int field, int index), and getString(int field, int index) The getBinary() method returns a byte array The getDate() method returns a long whose value represents a date Each method requires an integer parameter, whose value is the field ID of the field, and an index into the field Indexes are used to access values in a field The first value assigned to a field using addXXX() resides at index 0, and the value is retrieved using getXXX() The getFieldDataType(int fieldID) method is used to return the data type of the specified field The data type is returned as an integer field defined in the PIMItem interface These are BINARY, DATE, INT, STRING, and STRING_ARRAY The getFieldLabel(int fieldID) method is used to retrieve the label of the field specified in the parameter passed to this method The label is returned as a string The Quick Reference Guide at the end of this chapter lists methods that can be used to interact with a PIMList

are many predefined fields in a contact entry, as you ll note from reviewing the Quick Reference Guide at the end of this chapter However, the ContactList interface restricts the fields that are retained That is, some native contact databases do not support all fields defined in a contact entry The PIMListisSupportedField(int) method can be called to determine whether a field is supported because the API supports more fields than are associated with any single PIM database The API supports many different types of PIM databases The PIMListisSupportedField(int) method requires an integer parameter whose value is the field ID of the field and returns a boolean value For example, a contact entry has a named field used to store a telephone number However, a contact probably has multiple telephone numbers Two instances of the named telephone number field can be created, and both can be added via the addString() method Both telephone numbers can have the same field (ContactTEL) and can be further distinguished with attributes such as ATTR_HOME and ATTR_MOBILE The Quick Reference Guide at the end of this chapter contains a list of all predefined fields for the Contact interface Data values of these fields are set and retrieved using the setXXX() and getXXX() methods that correspond to the data type of the field A contact entry is associated with a contact list The contact list determines what fields from a contact entry are retained when the contract entry is saved to the contact database This is because all entries in the same list (that is, database tuple) have common fields The ContactList interface is used to interact with a contact list The createContact() method is used to create a contact for a contact list A contact can be imported into a contact list by calling the importContact(Contact element) method You use this method when transferring a contact from one contact database to another or when a Contact is created from a vCard data stream This method requires one parameter, which is reference to the contact being added to the contact list A contact can be removed from the contact list by calling the removeContact(Contact element) method, passing it reference to the contact that is being removed
