The file protocol is used to write information to a file from a MIDlet if the implementation supports the file protocol and if the device supports a file system Listing 13-3 illustrates the technique used to write information to a file Listing 13-4 contains the JAD file for this listing Listing 13-3 is structured similar to Listing 13-1 in that both listings contain a form that has Start and Exit commands associated with it, along with the required CommandListener, which is created within the constructor The text is written to the file when a user selects the Start command Logic to write to the file is contained within the start section of the commandAction() method First an OutputConnection is created by calling the open() method of the Connector Two parameters are passed to the open() method The first parameter is the schema for the file The schema begins with the protocol identifier called file, which is followed by the full path to the file, including the file name The append parameter is at the end of the schema The append parameter is a boolean value indicating whether or not the text should be written to the end of the file or to the beginning of the file If true, new text is appended to the end of the file If false, or if the append parameter is omitted, new text is written at the beginning of the file, overwriting the content of the existing file The file is automatically created if the file doesn t exist, even if the append parameter is set to true The second parameter is the file mode In this example the file is opened for output The file could also be opened for input by replacing the ConnectorWRITE with ConnectorREAD The ConnectorWRITE_READ is used to open the file for both input and output Once the connection is opened the program creates an OutputStream by calling the openOutputStream() method The OutputStream is then used to create a PrintStream, which is necessary to write text to a file You write text to the file by calling the println() method and passing this method the text that is to be written to the file The stream and connection are both closed once the text is written to the file, and a message is then displayed in an alert dialog box notifying the user that the operation was successful Any errors that are thrown are caught and displayed in another alert dialog box
