If you decide that you no longer want to train for this event, you can delete the entire training event by clicking the Delete Event button This causes a confirmation page to be shown that allows you to confirm whether you really want to delete the training event or cancel out of the operation and return to the events edit page
Logging In as an Online Trainer and Updating Event Workout Comments
As you complete the individual workout sessions and fill in your progress, you can click the Update Event button to update your progress in the application Your designated online trainer also has the ability to log in to the application and view your progress The online trainer will be able to provide comments or encouragement throughout your training For example, logging in as the user Jake, you will be able to monitor multiple users and offer comments When logged in as an online trainer, the user interface renders slightly differently with the Membership Status field at the top of the page displaying as Trainer, and the Edit Training page allowing you to edit the trainer s comments, as shown in Figure 9-7 This concludes the brief walkthrough of the Virtual Trainer application It is now time to discuss how the application was built by first describing the application requirements and then showing how the individual pages and backing technology were created

The Virtual Trainer Application Requirements
The following lists the key requirements for the application: Application users will have the ability to register new accounts for themselves and log in to the application Users will have ability to create a set of athletic events for which they will be able to train While creating training events, the user will be able to also select an online training advisor who will be able to monitor his or her progress and provide helpful comments along the way Once the athletic training events have been created, an individually customized set of training sessions are generated for each athletic event These represent individual date-based workout sessions that the user can follow Each individualized training session is assigned with a specific date and will be rendered with a checkbox allowing the user to check off whether he or she performed the specific training session In addition to the checkbox, the user will have an input text field where they can log any specific comments about the training session The online training advisor will also be able to enter comments for each training event as well as to provide guidance

The Virtual Trainer Application Architecture
In a very simple sense, the application is a classic master-detail application where the user can edit a set of items that are related to each other in a master-detail fashion Figure 9-8 is a UML diagram that provides visual representation of the data model entities of the application Later in the chapter, you ll see how to build a data access layer that can perform data operations on the data model that could reside in a relational database The Virtual Trainer application is comprised of the following elements: JSP pages and backing beans Navigational page flow JSF data model components Each is described in the following sections
