5 Choose which services to block and which to allow: Block All Incoming Connections Select this check box if you want to block all connections apart from vital network services, such as DHCP (for acquiring a network address), Bonjour (for finding other Macs and devices such as printers), and IPSec (for security) When you select this check box, Mac OS X makes the list box and the two lower check boxes unavailable CAUTION Blocking all incoming connections prevents you from connecting to a Mac via Screen Sharing or Remote Management [List of Allowed and Blocked Connections] If you ve left the Block All Incoming Connections check box cleared, you can create a list of allowed connections and blocked connections in the list box To add an application, click the + button, select the application in the dialog box that opens, and then click the Add button After adding the item, click the pop-up menu and choose Allow Incoming Connections or Block Incoming Connections, as needed

Automatically Allow Signed Software To Receive Incoming Connections If you ve left the Block All Incoming Connections check box cleared, select this check box if you want software signed by a valid certificate authority to accept incoming connections This is a compromise between naming each application that may (or may not) accept connections (and perhaps blocking some applications you ve forgotten to approve) and allowing any application at all to accept incoming connections In effect, you re outsourcing the approval to the CA Enable Stealth Mode Select this check box if you want the firewall to drop Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) packets straight into oblivion instead of responding civilly to them This is a good security measure for machines that are exposed on the Internet, but for Macs on a network that is protected by a firewall, you will probably want to leave Stealth Mode off so that you can use tools such as Ping to check network connectivity 6 When you ve chosen which services the troll will allow to pass the bridge, click the OK button to close the dialog box

Mac OS X includes a fantastic range of sharing capabilities that enable you to share everything from your files to your Internet connection or your screen You can even let someone else take over your Mac fully via either Screen Sharing or Remote Management (discussed in 12) These sharing capabilities are great when you re using the Mac at home or in a peer-to-peer network (see 20), but in other situations, they reduce the Mac s security so you ll probably want to turn most of them off NOTE The one Sharing feature you should keep running is the Remote Management feature; run this only if you use Remote Desktop to manage the Mac remotely Use the Allow Access For settings to restrict the use of Remote Management only to yourself and other administrators who will manage this Mac To turn off the Sharing features, click the Sharing icon in the Internet & Wireless area of the System Preferences window, and then clear each of the check boxes in the list box on the left of the Sharing pane (see Figure 16-8)
