If your company provides some of its workers with iPhones and iPod touches to encourage them to think out of the box and play inside it, it s vital that you lock the devices down as far as possible iPhones and iPod touches are especially vulnerable because not only do people tend to carry them everywhere (fair enough that s the point of the devices), but they re small enough for the light-fingered to slip in their pocket or secrete about their person (also part of the point) They can also carry a huge amount of data, can access e-mail and shared information, and even connect remotely on the company s network via VPN So if someone lifts one of your company s iPhones or iPod touches, you need to neutralize it as soon as possible

Your main line of defense for the iPhone or iPod touch is the passcode lock that prevents anyone from using the device without tapping in the correct passcode You can set the passcode lock either via a configuration policy (as discussed in 8) or manually through the Set Passcode screen (shown on the left in Figure 16-18), which you access by choosing Settings | General | Passcode Lock On the Passcode Lock screen (shown on the right in Figure 16-18), which appears after you have set the passcode and confirmed it, set the Require Passcode setting to Immediately to make sure the lock is applied as soon as the user switches the device off (putting it to sleep) If this is too restrictive, choose one of the shortest periods of time: After 1 Minute or After 5 Minutes The longer periods (After 15 Minutes, After 1 Hour, and After 4 Hours) render the passcode lock more or less useless if the device is lost or stolen To make the locking effective, you must also set the Auto-Lock setting to a short time, such as 1 Minute or 2 Minutes rather than 5 Minutes or Never This reduces the chance of the iPhone or iPod touch being stolen while unlocked through simply being on

Anyone determined enough to get at your data (or cunning enough to enlist a child) can simply keep whaling on the passcode until they get the right one, so you must also move the Erase Data switch to the On position to make the device erase all its data after 10 failed attempts to enter the passcode When you do this, the device pops up a warning panel at the bottom of the screen, and you must touch the Enable button to go ahead with the setting

Securing Your Network
Securing your network s Macs and handheld devices is a good start, but you ll also need to secure your network if you haven t already done so In this section, we ll go over the security measures you should put in place for a wireless network and for a wired network After that, we ll look at how to secure your network s Internet connection, which is likely to be its weakest link
Securing a Wireless Network
If you ve set up a wireless network, as discussed in 2, you should already have taken the first big step toward securing it using Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) to prevent unauthorized people from breaking users passwords and logging in themselves You can secure the wireless network further by limiting the MAC addresses that can join it, and by running a VPN across it
