To configure Software Update to check for updates, follow these steps: 1 Choose Apple | System Preferences to open the System Preferences window 2 In the System category, click the Software Update icon to open the Software Update pane 3 If the Scheduled Check tab isn t selected, click it now to bring the Scheduled Check pane to the front (see Figure 17-4) 4 For most client Macs, you ll want to select the Check For Updates check box, and then choose either Weekly or Daily in the pop-up menu Daily updates keep your client Macs safest, but put the greatest strain on your server or Internet connection, and frequent prompts to apply updates may distract users Monthly updates, while convenient for users, tend to leave the clients without the benefit of the latest fixes and updates for too long
Figure 17-4 Normally it s a good idea to set Software Update to check for updates either daily or weekly, and to download the available updates automatically
Mac OS X System Administration
5 If you select the Check For Updates check box, select the Download Updates Automatically check box if you want the client to download the update files automatically from the server Normally, this is most convenient for the users, as the updates are ready to roll when Software Update prompts the user to install them But if your server is the one providing the updates, and your network is fast, you can clear the Download Updates Automatically check box and have the client pull the files across from the server only when they are needed 6 When you ve made your choices, press -Q or choose System Preferences | Quit System Preferences to quit System Preferences
Installing the Updates
When you ve set Software Update to check automatically for updates, it prompts you to install any it has found If you prefer to check manually, choose Apple | Software Update to launch Software Update and make it check for updates From here, you can simply click the Install And Relaunch button to install the updates and restart the Mac, or the Install button to install the updates if none of them requires the Mac to be restarted afterward NOTE If one or more updates require the Mac to be restarted, Software Update first installs those updates that do not require a restart Software Update then prompts you to restart the Mac, logs you out, and then installs the updates Normally, though, you ll want to see what your Mac is getting To do so, click the Show Details button The Software Update dialog box expands to show the available updates Clear the check box for any update you do not want to install, and then click the Install Items button (its name includes the number of items for example, Install 5 Items) If Mac OS X prompts you to restart your Mac to complete the installation, do so as soon as is convenient
Back Up and Restore Data
Mac OS X System Administration
hile your company s knowledge workers focus on creating data, manipulating it, and squeezing value out of it, you as the administrator must focus on keeping the data safe for them This means backing up all the data that s valuable in case something goes wrong, and restoring the data from backup when something does go wrong Backup and restore can be a game of high stakes, and to save you from tripping up and getting impaled on them, Mac OS X Server provides a powerful feature called Time Machine for backing up data automatically and restoring it easily You just have to make sure Time Machine is turned on and pointing in the right direction so that you re in a good position to restore that valuable data after Humpty Dumpty discovers gravity To that end, in this chapter you ll learn how Time Machine works After that, I ll show you how to set up your backup disk on the server and point the clients to it, and then point the server to its own backup disk We ll then look at how to recover data from a Time Machine backup the easy way (on either a client or a server), followed by a glance at the hard way of recovering the server from a Time Machine backup
