Mac OS X Server provides several different tools for working with accounts Having these different tools brings power and flexibility at the risk of some accompanying confusion at first Here s a quick summary before you dive into the details: Server Preferences Server Preferences is the tool you ll normally want to use when you re getting started with user accounts The Users pane in Server Preferences lets you quickly create and delete user accounts with mostly standardized settings This is where you ll start Workgroup Manager Workgroup Manager is a powerful and complex tool that enables you to dig into the details of an account You can use Workgroup Manager to create new user accounts or to edit an account you ve created using Server Preferences for example, by changing settings in Workgroup Manager that Server Preferences does not let you change You ll learn more about Workgroup Manager after looking at Server Preferences Command-line tools As well as Server Preferences and Workgroup Manager, Mac OS X Server includes command-line tools for configuring user accounts These tools are useful when you re performing tasks automatically, as discussed in 19 Before you create any accounts, we ll run through the different account types that Mac OS X Server offers to make sure you understand what you re working with

To enable a user to access the server and use the services it s providing, you need to create a user account for that user The user account is Mac OS X Server s mechanism for authenticating the user For example, if you set up a user account named Ann Smith and assign a password to it, the server allows a user who claims to be Ann Smith to access it and use its services by supplying that password A user account typically contains the following: The user s e-mail address The user s instant messaging address for iChat

You can create user accounts in three different ways Mac OS X Server treats these accounts differently from each other: Create accounts using Server Preferences or Workgroup Manager The straightforward way to create a user account is to use Server Preferences on the server When you do this, the server stores them in its own directory You can also create user accounts in Workgroup Manager, discussed later in this chapter Import user accounts from a directory server If your company or organization already has user accounts stored on a directory server, you can import the accounts into your server When you do this, the original accounts stay on the directory server, which has the master copy, as it were On your server, you can then add extra information to the imported accounts For example, you can add or change a user s contact information or make the user a member of a group Mac OS X Server stores this information on your server and uses it together with the information from the directory server to control what the user can do Create local user accounts using System Preferences If you ve used a standalone Mac, you ll know that each Mac s administrator can create user accounts for other users via System Preferences These accounts are local to the Mac on which they re created they re not part of the network and only enable the users to log on to the Mac and access their home folders on that Mac, not to access the server, its services, or the network Generally you ll want to avoid creating local user accounts on your networked Macs, as your aim should be to retain centralized control through the directory For a small- or medium-size network, the best approach is usually to create accounts using Server Preferences on your directory server That way, you work directly with the user accounts and can see exactly which permissions they have, which groups they belong to, and so on You can then tweak the accounts as needed by using Workgroup Manager By contrast, when working with imported user accounts on one of the servers, you re essentially creating an extra set of users with partial information only the information you ve added on that server This extra layer of accounts can be useful, especially in larger organizations broken up into departments whose administrators enjoy a thick slice of autonomy But if you re trying to manage the network yourself, handling users and groups through the directory server will save you time, effort, and hair
