As I mentioned at the beginning of the chapter, to communicate with other computers, a computer uses one or more protocols formalized ways of communicating In this section you ll learn about Mac OS X Server s four protocols for file services, when to use each of them, and how to turn the protocols on and off as needed

Mac OS X Server provides a service to run each protocol the AFP service, the FTP service, and so on Depending on the installation options you choose, Mac OS X Server automatically sets up the AFP service, and may set up the SMB and NFS services as well As a result, you have a working network but you may need to change the services that are running You may also need to turn on the FTP service FTP is primarily used for file transfer across the Internet, and is the least secure of the four protocols for file services so don t turn it on unless you actually need it To see which protocols your server is using, open Server Admin and look at the services that are running: 1 Open Server Admin For example, click the Server Admin icon in the dock 2 In the Servers list on the left, double-click the server that you want to connect to 3 Type your user name and password if you haven t told your Mac to remember them, and then click the Connect button

Comments Mac OS X Server sets up AFP automatically Macs can use SMB too, but AFP is far preferable Use SMB only if needed Use FTP only if you need to provide file transfer services across the Internet Macs can use NFS too, but AFP is much preferable
Apple Filing 548 Protocol Server Message Block/ Common Internet File System File Transfer Protocol 137, 138, 139
Windows or Windows-compatible computers
File transfer, usually across the Internet
Network File 2049 System
UNIX and other NFS clients
Table 11-1 Mac OS X Server s Protocols for File Services
4 Expand the list of services in the Server pane, and see whether AFP, FTP, NFS, and SMB appear with green lights next to them (see Figure 11-1) Alternatively, look at the Services list in the Overview pane If a service doesn t appear, it s not set to run
Turning a Protocol s Service On or Off
To turn a protocol s service on or off, first connect to the server using Server Admin: 1 Open Server Admin and connect to the server 2 Click the server s entry in the Servers pane
Turning a Protocol s Service On
To turn a protocol s service on, follow these steps in Server Admin: 1 Click the Settings button to display the Settings pane 2 Click the Services tab to display the Services pane
Mac OS X System Administration
Figure 11-1 Look at the Services list or the Overview pane for the server in Server Admin to see which protocols your server is using
3 In the Select The Services To Configure On This Server list box, select the AFP check box, the FTP check box, the NFS check box, or the SMB check box, as appropriate 4 Click the Save button to save the changes The service appears in the list of services beneath the server, and you can configure it as described later in this chapter
Turning a Protocol s Service Off
The best way to stop using a protocol is to boot off any clients that are using the protocol s service, giving them a few minutes warning Here s what to do: 1 In Server Admin, expand the server s entry, and then click the service in the services list 2 Click the Connections tab to display the Connections pane (shown in Figure 11-2 for the AFP service)
