example, the zone comes immediately to the left of the top-level domain, which in this case is nebo-tech In Figure 14-7, you ll notice that the nebo-tech zone contains two specific records, one for www and one for ftp These records contain mappings that map the host name to an IP address In our example, www specifies a host within the nebo-tech zone This record can be used by the DNS server to resolve the host name into an IP address A computer system that needs to resolve a host name into an IP address sends a resolution request to the DNS server it s been configured to use Here s how the resolution process works: 1 The system that needs to resolve a host name sends a request to the DNS server it s been configured to use on IP port 53 If the DNS server has a record for the host name being requested, it returns the corresponding IP address If not, the process continues to step 2 The DNS server is said to be authoritative if it has a record for the domain name being requested in its local database 2 If the DNS server doesn t have a record for the requested host name, it sends a request to a root-level DNS server There are thirteen root-level DNS servers on the Internet When you install the DNS daemon on your Linux system, it s automatically configured with the IP addresses of these servers in the /var/lib/named/roothint file, shown in Figure 14-8 3 The root-level DNS server responds to your DNS server with the IP address of a DNS server that s authoritative for the TLD of the host name in question 4 Your DNS server sends a resolution request for the host name the TLD DNS server specified by the root-level DNS server 5 The TLD DNS server responds with the IP address of the DNS server that s authoritative for the DNS zone of the host name that you need to resolve 6 Your DNS server sends a request to the DNS server that s authoritative for the zone where the host name resides

7 The authoritative DNS server for the host name responds to your DNS server with the appropriate IP address 8 Your DNS server responds to the system that originated the request with the IP address 9 Your system contacts the host using its IP address When your DNS server resolves a host name for which it is not authoritative, it saves that address in its name cache If it receives a request to resolve the same host name again in the future, it simply pulls the IP address out of its cache and responds to the requesting system directly instead of going through the entire resolution process again One of the problems with current DNS implementations is fault tolerance If you had your DNS daemon running on a particular Linux system and it were to go down, name resolution for your network is gone To provide a degree of redundancy, you can configure master and slave DNS servers A master server is a DNS server that hosts zone files Any changes made to the zone are made to the zone files on the master server A slave DNS server, on the other hand, is configured to get its zone data from a master DNS server A slave DNS server can resolve host names just like a master DNS server To make this possible, the slave server contacts the master server and downloads its zone data This is called a zone transfer By configuring both a master and a slave server in your network, you provide a degree of fault tolerance If your master server were to go down, network hosts can still use the slave server for name resolution as long as they have been configured with its IP address
