Completing a Remote Installation Using VNC
VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing Essentially, VNC allows you to project the video output from one system to another system Using the VNC protocol, you can start the installation on your target system, but then use a Web browser on another system to view the installation screens On a SUSE Linux system, you can enter vnc=1 in the boot options field in the first installation screen, as shown in Figure 3-19 After starting the installation, you ll be prompted to provide various network parameters needed to create a VNC connection After doing so, you can access the Installation Wizard screens by opening a Web browser on another system and navigating to http://IP_address_of_system:5801 For example, if I assigned my system an IP address of 192168110 in the initial VNC configuration screens, I could access it by opening http://192168110:5801 in a browser, as shown in Figure 3-20 Using this VNC connection, you can complete the installation process from the comfort of your own office For your deployment plan, you need to determine which installation source you are going to use and prepare the prerequisite systems, if necessary Once you ve completed this step, your Linux deployment plan is complete You should now have the data you need to complete the installation in an organized, efficient manner You file your deployment plan in a safe place once your installation is complete This information can be an invaluable help for other system administrators who may need to work on your system at some point In my line of work, I work for a variety of different companies under contract When they have a problem, they call me and I go on-site to fix their systems Most of the time, this works out very well for everyone involved However, from time to time, I have to go on-site for a company that hasn t documented their network
