Project Planning
Forming a Project Team
What team members are essential to the Web development process
Most Web sites are developed for a client The client is the person or organization who pays for the work Examples of clients include: a corporation that wants to develop a corporate presence site an organization that needs a convenient way to stay in touch with its members a retail store that wants to develop an e-commerce site
Client Liaison Representative
The client liaison representative maintains contact with the client throughout the Web site development process Other team members may talk with the client The client liaison representative, however, is the person responsible for understanding the client s needs and keeping all other team members working toward the client s goals The client liaison representative asks many questions, including: What are the specific goals for the site Who is the target audience What is the budget When does the site need to be published Who will approve the site How often does the client want a status report During the analysis and planning stage, the client liaison representative defines the deliverables, which are the actual work that the team will submit Since a Web site development project may last for many months, the client liaison representative works with the client to set milestones A milestone is a specific step in the Web site development process and a date for its completion Examples of milestones are shown in Figure 112
Establishing deliverables and milestones is an important part of a Web development project What milestones might need to be set for a Web development project

Project Manager
The project manager oversees the work of all the team members and ensures that team members work together He or she assigns responsibilities and specific tasks to team members and tracks their progress to make sure the completed Web site is delivered on time and on budget The project manager also provides resources and help as needed to achieve this goal, as shown in Figure 113 on page 315

Project managers are problem solvers What part of project management would you find most interesting
Web Author
The Web author, also known as the content developer, writes the material that appears on the Web site Web authors may also select images that support or complement a site s text Large projects may require several Web authors When a project has multiple Web authors, a content editor may work with the team of Web authors to gather all the material that will appear on the site Web authors use outlines to explain their ideas about the content for each page As the team decides on the specific pages to include in the site, the Web author begins writing the words Web site text should: support the site s purpose and goals be presented in an easy-to-read format be appealing be accurate and grammatically correct
Web designers create animations and other visual elements for Web sites Why do you think Web authors and Web designers must work together
Web Designer
The Web designer provides visual direction for the Web site (see Figure 114) Based on the site s goals and content, the Web designer selects a color palette, gives shape and definition to each page, and provides a consistent look to the site The Web designer then makes sketches or creates storyboards for the site After the team has approved the prototypes, the Web designer: creates the graphics, including navigation buttons, animations, interface layout, and charts creates or obtains photographs, maps, and other visuals to enhance the site
