While RAM is the computer s primary storage, it only saves data temporarily You need to use a secondary storage device to save your data for the long term Applications and frequently used files are usually stored on your computer s hard drive Removable storage devices such as CDs are used to transfer files between computers They also are used to install new software applications on a computer s hard drive A device s storage capacity is usually measured either in megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB) A byte is the amount of storage space required to store a single character, such as the letter d A megabyte is about one thousand bytes, while a gigabyte is about one million bytes The storage capacity of different storage devices is shown in Table 22 Types of Storage Devices

Storage Device Hard Drive What It Does The hard drive (also called the hard disk) is the major storage device inside your computer This is where all your programs, files, and folders are permanently stored A floppy disk is a portable device that stores smaller files such as text documents A zip disk is a portable device that can store a greater amount of data than a floppy disk Storage Capacity 40 GB to 100 GB or more

Floppy Disk
144 MB
Zip Disk
100 MB to 750 MB
You Should Know If the letter D is equal to one byte, then 1 MB is about one thousand Ds, a 1 GB disk could store about one million Ds, and a 1 KB disk could store about one billion Ds
CDs and DVDs
CDs and DVDs are portable devices that can store very large amounts of information, such as video They are often categorized as read only, recordable, or rewritable Flash drives (sometimes called pen or thumb drives) plug directly into a computer s USB (Universal Serial Bus) port Some are as small as a pen or a keychain
CD = 700 MB DVD = 47 GB to 17 GB
Flash Drives
32 MB to 512 MB or more

Computer Basics
Types of Software
How is an operating system essential to the computer
You Should Know UNIX and Linux are two other flexible operating systems that are found primarily on networks
Computer software gives instructions to the computer s hardware to make it work There are three main categories of software: operating system, application, and utility software
Operating System Software
An operating system (OS) controls all of the other software programs on a computer The two most common OSs are: Microsoft Windows (for PCs) and Macintosh OS (for Apple Computers) An OS is responsible for keeping track of everything the computer does (task management), and moving data between RAM and other storage devices (memory management) A computer s OS also keeps track of input devices, and sends output to the appropriate hardware An OS provides an interface through which a user gives commands to the computer A graphical user interface, or GUI (pronounced goo-ee ), allows users to select words, symbols, or graphics from a desktop Both the Windows and the Mac OS desktops shown in Figure 23 use a GUI
A GUI desktop displays the files, folders, menus, and programs available on the computer How does a GUI make a computer easy to use

Application Software
You use application software (commonly referred to as applications) to perform different tasks on your computer Common application software includes word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation applications Web browsers and e-mail programs are also types of application software Examples of application software are shown in Table 23 Types of Application Software
Type of Software Web browsers Function Use to visit Web sites on the Internet Examples Microsoft Internet Explorer , Apple Safari , Netscape , Mozilla Firefox Microsoft Outlook , Eudora , Outlook Express Microsoft Word , Corel WordPerfect
