Using CSS for Page Layout
How can I use CSS to position elements on a Web page
Due to the limitations of early browsers and HTML code, Web designers needed to use tables to format page layout Using tables for layout can be inefficient in that tables can make pages inaccessible and add several lines of code to a page Many designers are starting to use internal CSS instead of tables to easily control the position and appearance of elements on a page The two main tag sets used to define page layout are <DIV></DIV> and <SPAN></SPAN> The <DIV> tag is mainly used to control blocks of information in paragraphs, images, or forms The <SPAN> tag is typically used in individual inline tags You can use <DIV> and <SPAN> tags to specify the right, left, top, and bottom position of an HTML element There are three types of positions that you can specify Absolute positioning uses numeric values to place elements precisely on a page, relative to the top and left of a browser window You can specify values in pixels, percentages, inches, points, and several other units of measure Static positioning places elements on a page normally, just as if you had laid out the page without tables or <DIV> tags Relative positioning also places elements on a page normally However, you can adjust the position of an element relative to how it would normally appear on a page Of the three position types, absolute is the most common because it allows designers to position elements precisely on the page
