The Language Club Web site will have a hierarchical structure In the following activity, you will chart this hierarchical structure and assign pages to levels

1 Open a blank word processing document, or take out a piece of paper At the top of the page, write or key Language Club Site Navigation Structure This is the title of your chart 2 Using the information provided in Table 53, create a chart that shows the navigation structure of the proposed Language Club site It should use a hierarchical structure with the home page at the top Figure 59 shows part of this chart Be sure to include each page s title in the corresponding box and to draw lines showing the relationships among the pages 3 Add five lower level pages (subpages) under the Events page Write appropriate page titles for these subpages (see page 148 for naming guidelines) 4 Proofread your chart Name your document Language Chart and save it according to your teacher s instructions

Jargon A Web page s title appears in the Web browser when users view the page A Web page s file name, on the other hand, is the name of the HTML document that makes up the Web page

Choose logical names that visitors will understand A title such as Change Password suggests that users should go to this page to change their password Page titles should be short and descriptive Page titles should be consistent with your naming scheme On a Web site about Shakespeare s plays, where one page is titled Hamlet, another page should be titled Macbeth (not Tragedy2 or ScottishPlay)

Choosing a File Name A file name is the name of the HTML document that makes up the Web page itself Follow these guidelines when choosing a file name Select names that make sense and are consistent and easy to remember For example, imagine that you are creating a library s site that will eventually contain thousands of pages It would be difficult to find the file that corresponds to the book Emma if that book s Web file were named x52h61awhtml A file named emmahtml would make it much easier to locate that book s file Use Save As instead of Save when you first save your Web page, and enter a good file name into the File name box Each file name must have either the standard html extension or the less common htm extension so Web browsers will recognize that the file as an HTML page Keep file names short and omit blanks Use the underscore character (_) as a substitute for a blank space Use lowercase letters instead of uppercase letters
