The Courier New font in Figure 2-9 is a monospaced font Monospaced fonts use the same amount of space for each letter Unless you need to display programming code or wish your page to look like a typewriter, avoid monospaced fonts The most common font families used on the web are sans-serif fonts Sans is a French word meaning without Thus, a sans-serif font does not have the little lines at the edges of the characters Sans-serif fonts are easier to read on a computer screen Look at Figure 2-9 again The Verdana and Arial fonts are very clean No serifs are present

There are three methods to apply CSS The first method is to use the <style> tag in the <head> section This method, called embedded styles, allows you to set rules for the tags on the entire page For single-page web sites, this is the best method Second, you may use the style attribute and apply rules directly to an element Use this method when you have an element with a unique style need This method is far too tedious to apply to an entire page Rules applied in this manner will override those set in the style tag For web sites with multiple pages, embedding the style on each page is tedious The correct implementation here is to create a style document To access the rules, you place a <link> tag in the <head> section Style documents are covered in 4
