Spanning rows and Columns
The <td> tag contains the data for the table Typically, one cell holds one piece of data However, there might be times where multiple cells need to hold one piece of data Another way to think of this is to merge multiple cells into one cell In HTML, this is called spanning
t ip Spanning is very similar to cell merging in Microsoft Excel
6 B u i L d i n g TA B L e s
There are two types of spanning You can span across rows or span across columns Both result in one <td> being used across the span The rowspan attribute of the <td> tag creates a row span Row spanning in effect will make a cell seem taller Consider the table shown in Figure 6-3 The table sells several products for a sports team Three jerseys and two hats are for sale Notice how the item repeats several times and the price repeats These are good candidates for row spanning The code in Code Block 6-6 creates Figure 6-3
Code BloCk 6-6
<table border="1"> <caption>Team products for sale</caption> <tr> <th>Product</th> <th>Team</th> <th>Price</th> </tr> <tr> <td>Home Jersey</td> <td>Elliott Eagles</td> <td>$3599</td> </tr>
Figure 6-3 A table of products before row spanning

<tr> <td>Home Jersey</td> <td>Allentown Alligators</td> <td>$3599</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Home Jersey</td> <td>Mt Washington Presidents</td> <td>$3599</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Hat</td> <td>Elliott Eagles</td> <td>$1999</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Hat</td> <td>Mt Washington Presidents</td> <td>$1999</td> </tr> </table>
Again, notice that there are three jerseys and two hats These numbers become important when row spanning The steps to span a series of rows are 1 Count the number of rows to span 2 Add the attribute rowspan= row num to the first <td> tag 3 Remove the other <td> tags Code Block 6-7 and the following illustration show the row-spanned table The jersey, hat, and prices have been merged into one cell respectively This table is easier to read than the one in Figure 6-3
