to Play Every Frame This will play every frame of the animation as fast as the computer is able to play it back If the scene has many objects or is deforming complex geometry, the scene might play back slowly If it is a simple animation, such as a bouncing ball, it will play back quickly When you set the Playback Speed to Real Time, the animation will play back at a constant speed and drop frames to maintain real time if the animation is too complex You can use the hot keys shown in Table 14-3 to move through the animation without touching a mouse These are great for quickly reviewing an animation Let s work on a simple tutorial to learn how to keyframe and edit keys in Maya TABLE 14-3 HOT KEYS

This tutorial will teach you how to keyframe and tweak animation by creating a simple animation of a bouncing ball First, we will set up the scene for animation, and then we ll create objects, key the ball s animation, and edit and apply character animation techniques by adding more keyframes

Animation Basics
N OTE
Even something as simple as a bouncing ball is usually the best and first
test of a good animator and a good starting point as a newbie animator to land an internship or job
Set Up the Animation
Before we start animating, let s set up some preferences First, we need to decide what the final output of this animation will be If it s NTSC video, we need to set the frame rate to 30 fps If it s film, we ll use 24 fps Although you can set the animation to a different frame rate later on, it s much easier to set it at the proper frame rate from the beginning
N OTE
If you set your animation to 24 fps and output to video, your animation
will increase in speed Therefore, it s important that you figure out your final output before you start
1 2
To change the frame rate, choose Window | Settings/Preferences | Preferences to open the Preferences window From the Categories list on the left side, select Settings, and change Time to NTSC (30 fps), as shown in Figure 14-8 Now Maya is set to use 30 fps

The Complete Reference
Change the playback speed to be in real time From the Categories list, select Timeline The main Preferences window will update with new information Under the Playback Speed box, choose Real-time [30 fps] This way, when you click the Play button, the animation will play in real time Set the range of frames for our animation In the Range Slider, type 1 in the Playback Start Time field and type 120 in the Playback End Time field (see Figure 14-3) This indicates that you ll use frames 1 120 for your animation and limits the display in the Time Slider to those frames Choose Create | NURBS Primitives | Sphere, and then choose Create | NURBS Primitives | Plane A NURBS sphere and a flat NURBS plane should appear in your scene Select the NURBS plane surface and scale it in all directions In the Channel Box, set the Scale X, Scale Y, and Scale Z values to at least 80, so that you leave enough space for the ball to bounce around The objects should resemble those shown in this illustration Before you start moving and keyframing the sphere, let s move the pivot of the sphere to its base This will help squash and stretch the sphere s shape toward the bottom of the sphere Select the sphere, select the Move tool, and press the INSERT (HOME) key on your keyboard Move the green line down in Front or Side view, so the center of the pivot the blue square rests at the bottom of the sphere Press the INSERT (HOME) key to close the pivot editing mode
