Now we will animate these objects to resemble the behavior of the solar system While they won t be completely accurate, we will attempt to animate the actions that occur during a one-month time span What this means is that the Earth will rotate around the Sun 30 degrees (360/12 = 30); the Earth will rotate around its own axis 30 times, once each day; and the Moon will rotate around the Earth 30 times (though this really happens every 27 days, but we ll round off to 30 just to make it easy) Now we need to decide how long this animation will last Since 30 seems to be the magic number we are using to determine orbits and rotations, let s say that the animation will be 30 seconds long So how many frames is this

By default, Maya s frame rate (frames per second, or fps) is set to 24, which is the standard for film production Since 30 seconds 24 fps = 720 frames, we will set the range of the animation to 720 frames long Let s get started:

Along the bottom of the Maya window you ll find the Range Slider, just below the Time Slider Set the total animation time and Range Slider time to 720 Now you will set up the Workspace to use another layout that is especially useful for animating: the Outliner/Perspective layout Choose the Outliner/Perspective layout button in the toolbox The Workspace layout will change
The Outliner
The Outliner, shown in Figure 2-22, is another way of displaying all of the objects in a scene The objects listed here show the hierarchies in a way that s similar to that of a common Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) view used to browse file directory structures To access the Outliner, choose Window | Outliner To unfold a hierarchy, click the plus sign (+) icon to the left of the object s name If you want to view all of the branches and subbranches of a hierarchy, hold down the SHIFT key and click the plus sign
the + icon to the left of the Sun node (and notice that the plus sign changes to a minus sign) This will expand the hierarchy to reveal all of the child objects, as shown in Figure 2-22 Click and drag in the Outliner to select all the objects in the Sun s hierarchy Be sure that the Time Slider is set to 1, and then choose Animate | Set Key This will set a keyframe for all of the selected objects in the scene for their current positions at frame 1
SHIFT-click
FIGURE 2-22 The Outliner lists the current object in the current scene
Move the current Time Slider to frame 720 You can do this by clicking and dragging the Time Slider to the end of the frames being displayed, or you can type 720 into the Current Frame field (see Figure 2-11) In the Outliner, select the object named earthOrbit that you created earlier Then, in the Channel Box, set the Rotate Y attribute to 30 Again, choose Animate | Set Key to set a keyframe for this position
