Motion Blur
To understand motion blur, it is important that you understand how a camera in the real world works (See 20 for information on cameras) Motion blur is an artifact of exposure time It is noticeable as a blurry trail left behind a moving object In general, the faster an object moves by the camera, or the greater the change in distance of an object from frame to frame, the longer the blurred trail will be Maya offers two kinds of motion blur: 2D and 3D The 2D motion blur is a post-rendering effect and is calculated only in two dimensions It is faster to render, but it may not produce a realistic effect if the objects in the scene move toward the camera The 3D motion blur option works similar to a real camera, and at the default setting it depends on the shutter angle for the amount of blur You can increase the amount of motion blur by increasing the Blur by Frame attribute A setting of 1, as shown in Figure 21-12, blurs the image over one frame based on a 180-degree shutter A Blur by Frame value of 4, also shown in Figure 21-12, looks at the motion of objects over four frames and applies the blur If the motion blur appears too grainy, you can calculate additional samples in the Anti-aliasing Quality section of the Maya Software tab in the Render Settings window Two attributes here can be used to improve the quality of the motion blur: 3D Blur Visibility and Max 3D Blur Visibility Since these settings are adaptive, increasing the Max 3D Blur Visibility setting will render additional samples only where needed
