Exploring Continuity with the Align Command
To understand exactly how continuity is managed, here s a short tutorial that uses two curves to demonstrate achieving the various levels of continuity using the Align Curve command Keep in mind that there is an analogous command for NURBS surfaces called Align Surfaces

Open a new scene in Maya, and press F4 to display the Surfaces menu set in the menu bar Choose Create | EP Curve to select the EP Curve tool In the front view, draw a two-span curve (click three times) Press ENTER (RETURN) to finish drawing the curve Draw another curve next to that Select both curves and choose Display | NURBS | CVs Also, choose Display | NURBS | Hulls Now you ll be able to monitor the curves components and watch how they are affected by the different align settings that you are about to apply They should look similar to the curves shown in Figure 5-14 Select the curve on the left and then, holding down the SHIFT key, select the curve on the right Choose Edit Curves | Align Curves r In the Align Curves Options window, choose Edit | Reset Settings to return the command to its default settings

Use the component marking menu (RMB-click) to select the second CV in from the edge on the first curve The second CV from the edge is often referred to as the tangent CV Choose the Move tool from the toolbox (or press the W key) Try moving the CV upward in the Y direction, and you ll notice that the second CV from the edge on the other curve relocates to maintain tangency with the point that you are modifying, as shown in Figure 5-16
