scripting instructions, and the server converts this mix of display instructions (HTML) and processing instructions (written using scripting languages such as JavaScript or VBScript) into the HTML code that is sent to the client Our delivery model now has an additional step for the server to route the page through the processing We no longer do that processing on the client: 1 The user requests the page through the browser, and the request is sent to the web server 2 The web server finds the page on its hard drive 3 The web server routes the file with processing instructions to a part of the server that will perform the processing 4 The web server returns the HTML response to the client browser PART III 5 The browser receives the response, processes the HTML code, and displays the page This process is shown in Figure 11-4 The benefits for developers are enormous: all code can be developed for a known environment (the server) rather than for whatever the client system is using, the code is secure because it never leaves the server, and only the resulting dynamic HTML is returned to the client This model is the base for the older ASP and now the ASPNET architecture The main benefit of this model is that what is sent to the browser to be displayed is not created until after the client requests the page this produces a dynamic page The following example contains one possible way of creating a Greeting page that displays the time at the server when the page is requested by the client

The preceding example used the ASP scripting model, and we will get back to this example later in the chapter to see how we can develop the page using ASPNET First, though, we must look at the technologies in use
The Internet Technologies
Looking back at the discussion we had earlier about the standards that drive the Internet, it is understandable to think that all is rosy new standards are released and everyone implements them at once Unfortunately the Information Systems world doesn t change at the drop of a hat The term legacy conveys the idea that there are older standards still being used The challenge to us as developers is to find the most suitable technologies from the current standards that will solve the problem we are developing our application for, while trying to support as many legacy systems as we can in order to make our application available to as many systems as possible
Client-Side Technologies
There are a number of technologies in use on the client side that we need to look at The client-side technologies were developed to solve problems and, in some cases, to be different than a competitor
VBScript
Microsoft developed a scripted version of the popular Visual Basic language, VBScript, which was introduced in Internet Explorer 30 The VBScript language is not case sensitive, making it the language of choice for VB developers It is a direct competitor to JavaScript VBScript has one serious drawback: it is only available in Microsoft browsers, making it of limited use on the client
