Let s say the transaction log is left on the C: drive with the operating system, the paging file, and all the databases During the time between the INSERT and the UPDATE, the heads could have moved all over the disk and will need to seek the correct sector again before writing However, with a dedicated drive, the drive head (similar to the pencil) is exactly where it needs to be when the next write command is received and performance can be significantly improved For the server to enjoy performance gains on a RAID-0 or RAID-1, the transaction log must be the only data on the drive If the transaction log is placed on the same drive as the boot partition, the system partition, or the paging file, there won t be any performance gains The disk drive heads will be constantly moving for normal operating system functions and will have to constantly re-seek when the transaction log needs to be written How much usable space do we have for data if one of the drives is 50GB Remember, if one is 50GB, both must be 50GB In a mirror, the same data that is contained in one drive is contained in the other If we have two 50GB drives in our mirror, we have only 50GB of space for data

Now consider that the 2 s column is a drive and the 1 s column is a drive We can see this in Figure 6-8 Data is spread across two drives just as with RAID-0 However, there is no fault tolerance yet

In Figure 6-9 we add a third drive and add an odd parity bit The bit in drive 3 is written as either a 0 or a 1, depending on whether the data has an even number of 1 s or an odd number of 1 s If we look at the first bit on drive 1 (a 0) and the first bit on drive 2 (another 0), we see they are both 0 s and we have zero 1 s The parity bit is written as a 1 If we now count the number of 1 s in the top stripe, we see that we now have one 1 (an odd number of 1 s)

The next row or stripe has a 0 in drive 1 and a 1 in drive 2, giving us an odd number of 1 s The parity bit is written as a 0, so we still have an odd number of 1 s The same is repeated for each stripe in each of the drives
