While SQL Server does keep the indexes up to date as the table is updated, indexes can become fragmented due to page splits, as we mentioned earlier The same way your hard drive slows down when it gets too heavily fragmented, the database can slow down when indexes become fragmented Additionally, indexes can be created on a database but might never be used Even though the index isn t being used, it still incurs overhead to maintain it An occasional search of a database to ensure that all created indexes are being used is worthwhile We would drop unused indexes to eliminate the needless overhead

In SQL Server 2005, many dynamic management views (DMVs) and functions have been created to allow us to view key information within SQL Dynamic management views and functions have two primary scopes:
Server-scoped VIEW SERVER STATE permission is required on the server Database-scoped VIEW DATABASE STATE permission is required on the database
MCITP SQL Server 2005 Database Administration All-in-One Exam Guide
Dynamic management views and functions have to be referenced with two-part names The schema is consistently the sys schema, so you will see them referenced as sysViewName or sysFunctionName In this section, we ll present a couple of DMVs that can be used when maintaining indexes In 13, we ll present a more comprehensive view of DMVs along with a short introduction into Dashboard Reports available in SQL Server 2005 SP2
Fragmentation
The more page splits that an index experiences, the more fragmented it becomes An index can experience logical fragmentation (where pages are out of order) and extent fragmentation (where extents are out of order) Both types of fragmentation can be easily identified with the sysdm_dbindex_ physical_stats dynamic management function TIP The DBCC SHOWCONTIG command has been deprecated in SQL Server 2005 and replaced with the sysdm_db_index_physical_stats dynamic management function To view the fragmentation on all indexes on all databases, the following command can be used:
SELECT * FROM sysdm_db_index_physical_stats (NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL);
While you can use BOL to look up any of the columns in the output, a couple of them deserve special mention: Index_id 0 1 2 249 This identifies the type of index it is No index (heap) Clustered index Nonclustered index
Avg_fragmentation_in_percent Ideally, this number will be as close to 0 as possible, indicating the index is not fragmented Any number greater than 10 percent indicates fragmentation that may be causing performance problems and should be investigated Avg_page_space_used_in_percent This identifies how full a page is By comparing this to the FILLFACTOR, you can get an idea of how much activity the index is experiencing
