In this figure, we re adding transaction log backups to the full/differential backup strategies We ll cover restores in more depth later in this chapter, but for the big picture, imagine a failure at 4 PM on Wednesday What backups would be needed to restore your database to 3:59 PM We d need the full from Sunday, the differential from 1 AM Wednesday, and all the transactions logs since the differential The basic syntax to perform a transaction log backup follows It will fail if a full backup doesn t exist

File and Filegroup Backup
The last backup to discuss is a file or filegroup backup In s 3 and 7 we presented files and filegroups Primarily in earlier chapters, we talked about using files and filegroups for optimization purposes to help the database perform queries more quickly in very large databases We can also use files and filegroups in a backup strategy for very large databases
11: Data Recovery Strategies
NOTE If you don t remember the details about files and filegroups, take a look at the filegroups section in 7 We provided a full explanation there on when to use additional files and filegroups, and how they can be configured Let s state the obvious File and filegroup backups are only relevant in databases that have multiple files or filegroups This will occur in a very small percentage of databases We could use a file or filegroup backup when the database size and performance requirements make a full database backup impractical Instead, we separate the database into multiple files and filegroups, and then create a backup strategy to back up these files and filegroups Using file backups can increase the speed of recovery by allowing you to restore only damaged files without restoring the rest of the database As an example, if you have a secondary file (secondndf) stored on drive E: and drive E: fails, you can restore the secondary file only You don t have to restore the entire database Filegroups can contain several files Backing up a filegroup is the same as backing up each individual file within the filegroup If the database is using the full or bulk-logged recovery model, the transaction log would also have to be backed up It s also possible to create file or filegroup differential backups The same way a differential will back up all the changes since the last full backup, a file or filegroup differential will back up all the changes since the last file or filegroup backup
Backup Devices
Up to now we ve primarily discussed the backups using paths However, instead of including the paths in each statement, we can create a backup device to identify the path You may think that a backup device refers to a physical device I know I did when I first saw the term However, it doesn t, at least not directly A backup device is a path to a file that is located on a hard disk or other disk storage media such as tape Disk backup devices and tape backup devices work about the same; they just point to different media Backup devices can be on a local disk or tape, or on a shared network resource The file identified by the backup device can be as large as the free disk space allows To connect to a shared network resource, SQL must be aware of the resource by first mapping the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path (\\serverName\ShareName\) to a drive using the xp_cmdShell program One of the great strengths of backup devices is that they allow us to use virtual paths in a development environment and easily convert them to actual paths in the production environment For example, if we were creating backup scripts on an online server, we could test them using a device that points to one path on our test server, but another path on the online server The scripts would be identical Only the backup devices would be different When using a tape backup device, the tape has to be physically connected to a computer running SQL Server when using SQL Server s backup and restore capabilities We can t back up to a remote tape device, but we can back up to a remote disk device using the UNC path If using third-party tools (and many good ones are available), we don t have this limitation However, the test will focus on SQL Server 2005 capabilities
