Informational and Safety The arguments in Table 11-5 provide general information about the backup set or use basic checks to prevent data from being accidentally overwritten Some are under the BACKUP command, but most are available with RESTORE
MCITP SQL Server 2005 Database Administration All-in-One Exam Guide
Argument Description
Description ExpiredDate RetainDays Password Skip NoSkip MediaDescription HeaderOnly LabelOnly Stats VerifyOnly
Free-form text describing the backup set Specifies data when the backup set expires and can be overwritten Specifies number of days before the media can be overwritten Deprecated (weak protection) Used to prevent incorrect restore Instead of password security, physical security of backups is recommended Does not check the expiration date before overwriting backup sets Checks the expiration date before overwriting any backup sets Free-form text for the media set Returns information on all backups on the device or in the file Returns information on the device (not detailed information on the backups within the device) Displays a message each time another percentage completes Without this, SQL Server displays a message after each increment of 10% completes Verifies that the backup set is complete and readable Does not verify the structure or integrity
Table 11-5 Informational Arguments
Error-Checking Arguments The arguments in Table 11-6 are used for error checking
Argument Description
Checksum NoChecksum Stop_On_Error Continue_After_Error
Used to verify pages prior to writingThis is different from the backup checksum created for the backup stream and stored on the backup media set Disables page checksums (default) Stops if checksum errors are detected (default) Allows backup to continue even if checksum errors are detected
Table 11-6 Error-Checking Arguments
Backup Log Only Arguments Arguments in Table 11-7 are used only with the BACKUP LOG and/or RESTORE LOG statements
Argument Description
NoRecovery Standby Recovery No_Truncate No_Log | Truncate_Only
Used when additional logs will be applied Leaves the database in a recovering state Leaves the database in a standby state Read access is allowed Returns database to fully functional state Used to back up log when the database is damaged Database must be online Deprecated Removes inactive part of the log without backing it up Recommended to use simple recovery model instead

11: Data Recovery Strategies
Before the Backup
It s recommended that any database maintenance activities that need to be done be done before the backup As an example, it could be that you ve determined a need to rebuild one or two key indexes on a nightly basis This is a time-consuming and resource-intensive activity By completing the indexing before the backup, you have an optimized database that is backed up In case of failure, the database you restore is optimized Additionally, maintenance activities add to the transaction log If maintenance were to be done immediately after the backup, the transaction log would start the day with all the maintenance activity logged If a recovery were needed, the time would be lengthened due to a larger transaction log EXAM TIP As a best practice, do maintenance before any backups Maintenance done after a backup would result in a larger transaction log and a longer restore In the following exercise, we ll create full, differential, and transaction log backups This exercise assumes the previous exercise (creating backup devices) was done Exercise 114: Creating Backups 1 Open SSMS connected to the default instance of SQL Server 2 Click the New Query button to open a new query window 3 Enter the following script to add a line to the AdventureWorks database We will later delete it but see it return when we restore the database
USE AdventureWorks INSERT INTO PersonContact (FirstName, MiddleName, LastName,PasswordHash, PasswordSalt) VALUES ('Popeye', 'The','Sailorman', 'P@ssw0rd','P@$$S@lt') GO USE AdventureWorks SELECT * FROM PersonContact WHERE FirstName = 'Popeye'
4 Enter the following script to back up the AdventureWorks database to the backup device created in the previous exercise:
