4 B A test restore would restore the database to another location Test restores are not done over the original database The DBCC CheckDB command verifies the integrity of the database VerifyOnly only verifies that the backup can be read 70-444 1 D Since we have a full copy of the database on MCITP2 with a short latency, a detach and attach would be much quicker than any other method It would also have less of an impact on users 2 D The first step in the restore process is to back up the transaction log (also referred to as the tail log) so that you can restore all changes to the database since the last backup 3 C Since backups must be performed quickly, a full, differential, transaction log strategy is called for Answer C is the only one that includes all three backups Check DB has nothing to do with a backup strategy 4 B Rebuilding the indexes would cause a lot of activity in the transaction log Doing the backup after the rebuild would reduce the size of the transaction logs With smaller transaction logs, recovery time would be quicker 5 C A corrupt master database can be rebuilt using the setupexe command from the command line If the instance can t start, restores aren t possible using SQL Server Reinstalling SQL Server would be a last resort

While database administrators don t often get into the heavy programming (that s left to the database developers), DBAs do need to be aware of what s possible when it comes to data access methods Service Broker and event notifications allow a DBA to do some sophisticated monitoring of a database In this section we provide an introduction to some data access topics including the tried and true bulk-import topics needed by most DBAs

New to SQL Server 2005 is a component called Service Broker Service Broker provides reliable messaging services by guaranteeing that messages will be delivered exactly one time, delivered in the order sent It includes fault tolerance ensuring that messages are not lost The message can be simply informative or can cause actions to take place within an application or service program Messages can be sent to applications that use a single SQL Server instance or that use different instances on different servers Messages are asynchronous, meaning we don t have to have a continuous connection to send a message Messages can be queued and then sent when the infrastructure allows the message to be sent Service Broker uses TCP/IP to exchange messages It includes features to prevent unauthorized access and to encrypt the data when sent over the network As with many other topics in SQL Server 2005, Service Broker can fill a book on its own The goal in this chapter is not to make you an expert on Service Broker, but instead to show you some of its capabilities When a need for an asynchronous messaging

capability arrives in a high-end database application, you ll remember Service Broker and can drill into the details to create a solution to meet your needs
Service Broker Object Types
Service Broker applications have several database object types, as shown in Figure 12-1
Figure 12-1 Service Broker components
Message type
Queue
Service Contract Service program
The object types are:
Message Type This is used to communicate as part of a conversation The message type can be binary, well-formed XML, or valid XML types The message types are identical in each database that participates in a conversation Each message forms part of a conversation between applications Contract A contract is an agreement between two services It identifies the messages that will be sent between each It also identifies if a message can be sent (as an initiator) or received (as a target) Queue The queue accepts messages for a specific service Each service has one queue Messages are placed in the queue by the Service Broker, and an application (or service program) then retrieves messages from the queue Queues can be viewed by querying the systransmission_queue catalog view (SELECT * FROM systransmission_queue) Service The service object represents the addressable endpoint for a service A service is created on a queue related to a contract It defines the name of the queue that holds the messages for the service and specifies the contract(s) that use this service Service Program or Application This is the program that provides the logic for the service Service Broker can be configured to automatically activate the program when a message is in queue, or the program can be scheduled to check for messages periodically Service programs send response messages back to the initiator as a two-way conversation Conversations are reliable, asynchronous exchanges of messages
