When discussing how to use Service Broker, two themes tend to recur These are the benefit of asynchronous messages and guaranteed delivery Let s define both of these phrases in the context of Service Broker

If you and I were standing face to face, we could talk, and as you finish what you say, I could respond I finish, you respond As we talk, there wouldn t be large gaps between the time one person stops talking and another person starts talking And, unless one of us was rude, we would not be engaged in other activities as we talked Asynchronous messages work like email If I send you an email, I don t wait until you respond As soon as I click Send, I can move on to other work If either of our computers is having temporary connectivity problems, the email infrastructure waits and eventually the sent message is received In asynchronous message processing, the application that sends the message is immediately free to work on something else without waiting for a result When the message is delivered, the server can notify the application that the message was successfully processed Even though asynchronous messages may not be delivered immediately, they are still delivered and maintained in a specific order The queue maintains the order of all the messages

Service Broker has built-in processes that ensure that messages sent from one service to another are actually sent A conversation or dialog occurs between the two services when messages are sent If messages are undeliverable, they can be viewed in the systransmission_queue using the following statement:
SELECT * from systransmission_queue

Service Broker Uses
SQL Server Service Broker provides a database-oriented middleware (a communications layer that allows applications to interact across a network) This can be useful for any application that needs to perform processing asynchronously Some typical Service Broker Uses are listed in the following bullets
Asynchronous triggers A traditional trigger won t complete until all actions associated with the trigger complete Sometimes we want the trigger to complete now, even if an additional action won t occur until later The trigger can send a message to Service Broker As soon as the message is sent by the trigger, the trigger considers the action complete Service Broker provides guaranteed delivery, so even if the message were to be in queue for a while, we know it would be delivered Reliable query processing Some applications need to guarantee a query is processed The application can use Service Broker to combine the process of reading the message, running the query, and returning the results into a single transaction If any part of the transaction fails, it all fails and the message can be returned to the queue to run again later Reliable data collection For applications that collect data from many different sources, it s possible to lose connectivity With asynchronous message delivery, even if we occasionally lose connectivity, we still have guaranteed delivery Distributed server-side processing for client applications In large distributed applications such as online sales, it s possible for one of the links to break down For example, the inventory database may be unavailable, but we may still want to accept orders Instead of one process stopping all sales, Service Broker can be used to queue messages and process them later
Now that we ve completed an overview of Service Broker, let s see it in action The following three exercises show you how to configure Service Broker and how to send and receive messages Exercise 121 sets up the databases Exercise 122 configures the Service Broker components Exercise 123 uses T-SQL scripts to mimic an application that would send and respond to messages In this first exercise, we ll create two databases that we ll use for Service Broker Exercise 121: Create Two Databases and Ensure They Are Configured for Service Broker 1 Open a new query window in SSMS 2 Create a database named Ch12SB1 for our first Service Broker database using the following code:
