Notice that the heavy black stair-stepped line is the Percent Log Used counter Each stair-step increase reflects a time of running the script When the log reached 70% full, the alert fired and the job ran We can see that the Avg Disk Queue Length counter suddenly shot up as the transaction log was backed up, and the Percent Log Used counter fell back close to zero 7 Clean up the extra data you entered with this script:

Recurring This is a regular schedule such as once a week One time This is to occur once and once only Start automatically when SQL Server Agent starts Start whenever the CPUs become idle

Using Barcode generation for Word Control to generate, create EAN-13 image in Microsoft Word applications.
The recurring and one-time schedules are easy to understand The other two need a little explanation For any job that you want to run as soon as a system is rebooted or restarted, select the option to start automatically when SQL Server Agent starts During normal operation, SQL Server Agent won t be restarting on its own If it does restart, the system has probably been restarted Last you can choose to have some jobs run only when the CPU(s) become idle There s a caveat, though This is not available until you define what idle is for the CPU This is done in the Advanced tab of the SQL Server Agent properties

Sometimes you may want a job, alert, or operator to be disabled It is relatively simple to do so and much preferred to deleting and then re-creating them For jobs and alerts, you can simply right-click the object within SSMS and select Disable Operators, jobs, and alerts can all be disabled by accessing the properties page and clearing the Enabled check box Once disabled, the entry appears with a small, red down arrow Disabled jobs, alerts, and operators won t function until enabled again
SQL Server Agent Mail
When creating alerts, we have the capability of configuring email While earlier we only entered the email address, a little more is involved in making it work SQL Server 2005 supports two mechanisms for sending e-mail: SQL Mail (for legacy support) and Database Mail In previous versions of SQL Server, the method of sending email was SQL Mail While it is still supported for backward compatibility, Microsoft is pushing the usage of Database Mail as a better substitute
SQL Mail
SQL Mail is Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) based It uses Exchange Server to send and receive email To use it, you must configure a MAPI profile on the SQL Server computer, which requires the installation of a MAPI client such as Microsoft Office Outlook SQL Mail is deprecated and will be removed in a future version of SQL Server
13: Database Administrator Tools
EXAM TIP If you are upgrading to SQL Server 2005 from SQL Server 2000, and SQL Mail was in use, it s recommended to enable Database Mail to convert all of the SQL Mail functions to Database Mail Once this is done, the MAPI client used with SQL Mail (probably Microsoft Outlook) should be removed from the server
Database Mail
Database Mail allows email to be sent through any Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) server It does not require installing a MAPI client on the SQL Server Once Database Mail is configured, SQL Server Agent jobs can be configured to send email It s possible to configure multiple Database Mail profiles within a single SQL Server instance and pick which profile will be used when a message is sent Some benefits of Database Mail include:
Messages are sent asynchronously via a Service Broker queue Queries can be sent and result sets returned via email It includes multiple security features including filters to prevent unwanted attachments and a governor to limit the size of attachments The component that delivers email runs outside of SQL Server in a separate process Even if the destination SMTP Server were not online, the component would not load down SQL Server, but instead the queued messages would still be sent when it came back online EXAM TIP Database Mail is a more secure solution to use when a database solution requires the ability to send email and/or send the results of queries in email messages SQL Mail is deprecated and should not be used
In line with Microsoft s SD3+C (Secure by Design, Secure by Default, and Secure in Deployment and Communication) philosophy, Database Mail is off by default It can be enabled in the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration tool and also requires some additional steps
In the next exercise, we ll configure Database Mail in SQL Server The overall steps to configure it are Enable Database Mail in the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration tool Create a Database Mail profile Add the SQL Server Agent service account to the DatabaseMailUserRole in the msdb database Configure the alert properties of SQL Server Agent to use Database Mail Restart the SQL Server Agent service
