The Principle of Least Privilege states that we should give users the permissions they need, but no more This principle has been around for a long time and transcends IT The military follows a Need-To-Know principle that works the same way Individuals are given exactly what they need to know for a topic or mission, but no more If users need to read data, we grant SELECT permission on the specific tables or views they need to read We don t grant SELECT permission on all tables and views in the database We don t just add users to the db_datareader role if they only need to read a few of the tables or views From a usability perspective, it is much easier to just put everyone into the sysadmin server role or db_owner database role Then we don t have to manage security However, usability isn t the only consideration Security is very important When creating a security policy and identifying which roles to create and which roles to add users to, keep the Principle of Least Privilege in mind

Earlier, we talked about using the Guest account for easy administration on smaller implementations of SQL Server This works fine if we want to grant access to a database for all users who have access to the server We can grant login access for a group of users, enable the Guest account in all the databases, grant appropriate permissions to the Guest account, and we re in business But what if we want only a specific group of users that can access the server to have access to a specific database The Public role can be used to accomplish this Assume we have a small company with two key departments: Sales and Research and Development All the users in the Sales department are in the G_Sales Windows global group All the users in the Research and Development department are in the G_RnD Windows global group Our SQL Server has two databases (RnD and Sales) The Research and Development department needs access to the RnD database and the Sales The Sales department, on the other hand, needs access to the Sales database However, we don t want sales personnel to be able to access the RnD database For the users in the Research and Development department, we can create a database user named RnD_Users in the RnD database mapped to the G_RnD global group We then grant the appropriate permissions to the Public role, and since the RnD_Users are in the database, they have the permissions assigned to the Public role Since the Sales users don t have access to the RnD database, they would not have access to the RnD database We can see this in Figure 8-23

Managing access with the Public role
We could similarly map the Sales users to the Sales database and assign appropriate permissions to the Public role Now all the users in the G_RnD global group have the appropriate permissions to the RnD database, but none of the Sales users have access A logical question is, Why not just grant permissions to the RnD_Users group instead of the Public role This would work until we needed to grant permissions to an additional group Assume we are tasked with granting several managers the same permissions
