As an example, it could be that you ve determined a need to rebuild one or two key indexes on a nightly basis This is a time-consuming and resource-intensive activity By completing the indexing before the backup, you have an optimized database that is backed up In the case of failure, the database you restore is optimized Additionally, maintenance activities add to the transaction log If maintenance were to be done immediately after the backup, the transaction log would start the day with all the maintenance activity logged If a recovery were needed, the time would be lengthened due to a larger transaction log TIP As a best practice, do maintenance before any backups Maintenance done after a backup would result in a larger transaction log and a longer restore In the following exercise, we ll create full, differential, and transaction log backups This exercise assumes the previous exercise (creating backup devices) was done Exercise 103: Create Backups 1 Open SSMS while connected to the default instance of SQL Server 2 Click the New Query button to open a new query window 3 Enter the following script to add a line to the AdventureWorks database We will later delete it and see it return when we restore the database
