Web services are a broad range of technologies that allow different applications to communicate with each other They are based on a core set of standards:

XML provides the common syntax used to represent the data Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) is used to exchange the data SOAP normally travels over HTTP (or HTTPS when secure communication is required) Web Services Description Language (WSDL or whiz-dull ) provides a mechanism to describe the capabilities of a web service

Web services are used heavily in Internet applications For example, when you purchase a product online, web services are used to validate and approve your credit card The credit card company has created a web service with a WSDL that describes the service and the specifics of what can be requested and how Appropriate data (name, credit card number, expiration date, and so on) is formatted into an XML document and sent to the credit card company using SOAP A response comes back either approving or rejecting the request Other common uses of web services include weather, shipping companies, financial companies, and much more For example, some news sites include weather data (temperature, humidity, and forecast) on pages within their site These news sites don t have their own weather service, but instead subscribe to a national weather service that provides the information via a web service A key point is that the web service makes the data available externally as long as the external developer follows the proper format of the web service With this in mind, almost any external application can be used to access the web service If the format of the web service is not followed exactly, data isn t shared The web service allows queries of a database using Internet technologies One of the beauties of web services is that they are platform-independent Since the data requests (and the data responses) are formatted in XML, the back-end databases can be any database that understands XML Today, we d be hard pressed to find a current database that doesn t understand XML

Just as importantly, the client consuming the web service can be anything For example, it could be a Windows-type application that is accessing the Internet and pulling the data from the web service It can also be a web browser running on any client that is accessing the web service Figure 11-3 shows how an application would go through the Internet and through the firewall to SQL Server to retrieve data The application could be initiated by a web browser accessing a third-party web application or a regular Windows application with Internet access either way, the user has access to the Internet The user or application issues a command activating a web method that ultimately executes a stored procedure on the SQL Server s endpoint

User issues command activating web method
EXAM TIP If you need to provide external access to your database via the Internet, the most common method is via a web service With a web service, applications created by external developers can access the data that we choose to make available via the web service Since a web service can accept parameters, we can also accept data via a web service The firewall (Microsoft s Internet Security Accelerator [ISA] in this figure) would have the necessary ports open to access the endpoint This is typically done by creating a web publishing rule on ISA, mapping traffic from the Internet to the internal SQL Server computer By default, HTTP uses port 80 and HTTPS uses port 443 Different ports could be chosen if desired; the HTTP endpoint, the web service, and the firewall all need to be configured with the same port When the traffic reaches the SQL Server computer, the system looks at the port and recognizes that the SQL Server endpoint is configured to handle it The traffic is passed to the endpoint If the web method is executing a stored procedure, the stored procedure then executes on SQL, and the results are sent back to the Internet and the application that issued the command As we can see, the web services aren t created in the database Instead, the web service is created by the developer in one of the NET programming languages such as C# or VB With this in mind, it s beyond the scope of the MCITP test objectives to actually
