To demonstrate consuming a web service, I created a small C# program within Visual Studio After registering the web service in Visual Studio, I was able to add about four lines of code to populate the data grid from the web service It looks like Figure 11-5 NOTE If you have Visual Studio and want to recreate this C# Windows application, the following are the four lines added to the new project after adding a button and a data grid VIEW named dataGridView1:

Linked servers are created when we need to use distributed queries A distributed query simply means that we want to execute queries on more than one server The remote server can be another SQL Server, an Access database, an Oracle server, or any other server as long as we have an OLE DB provider as the remote database In Figure 11-6, we can see how this works once it s configured The client application still submits the queries to the front-end SQL Server However, any distributed queries are forwarded to the remote servers holding the remote databases Microsoft offers many OLE DB providers, but often a vendor will update their DLL and make it available for download In other words, if you don t see the OLE DB provider you need included in SQL Server, check with the vendor to see if they have a DLL that can be downloaded Without a linked server, our query can be executed with OPENROWSET or OPENDATASOURCE While that s fine for an ad hoc query, if you plan on executing the query more than a few times, you could create a linked server A linked server allows us to reference database objects in a remote server using the four-part name serverdatabaseschemaobject A linked server can be created in two steps First, we create the linked server, and next we configure the logins

Creating a Linked Server
It s very important to understand where we are creating the linked server Take a look at Figure 11-7 We configure the linked server on MSSQL1 Another way of saying this is that we add Oracle1 as a linked server to MSSQL1
Figure 11-7 Creating a linked server
Client application SQL Server Remote server
MSSQL 1
Oracle 1
EXAM TIP Make sure you understand the perspective of where the linked server is created We add the definition of the linked server to the local server, not the other way around Often we don t have administrative control of the remote server, so we can t create anything on the remote server You can use two possible methods when you want to create a linked server:
Use the stored procedure sp_addlinkedserver Use the GUI in SSMS
sp_addlinkedserver
The syntax for the system stored procedure sp_addlinkedserver is:
sp_addlinkedserver [ @server= ] 'server' [ , [ @srvproduct= ] 'product_name' ] [ , [ @provider= ] 'provider_name' ] [ , [ @datasrc= ] 'data_source' ]
11: Data Access
[ , [ @location= ] 'location' ] [ , [ @provstr= ] 'provider_string' ] [ , [ @catalog= ] 'catalog' ]
Table 11-2 shows the parameters available with sp_addlinkedserver
Parameter Comments
@Server @srvproduct @provider @datasrc @location @provstr @catalog
Name of linked server Network or DNS hostname if SQL Server OLE DB data source OLE DB provider friendly name Data source (different for different OLE DB providers) Location of database (different for different OLE DB providers) Connection string required by some OLE DB providers (different for different OLE DB providers) Catalog (default database in SQL) to use when connecting (different for different OLE DB providers)
Table 11-2 sp_addlinkedserver Parameters
What s not apparent is that many of the parameters are used differently, or not used at all, depending on what provider is being used For example, an Access provider will use the data source parameter to identify the name of the database, including the path For another SQL Server, the data source parameter will hold the instance name, or may even be blank for the default instance Adding another SQL Server as a linked server can be accomplished quite easily The following script shows that only the server name and the product name are needed to add another SQL Server as a linked server:
