SSRS Server Placement
SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) was originally designed to allow internal users to access reports on an intranet web server However, it is possible to use SSRS to make reports available to a much larger audience Some other possibilities include:
Extranet Deploying Report Server on an Extranet using either Windows Authentication or Custom Authentication Extranets are used for trusted partners and sometimes trusted customers depending on the business model An extranet allows authorized users to access part of your internal network via the Internet Internet A public Report Server configured for anonymous access Embedded reports These are hosted in a ReportViewer control in custom applications that you create and deploy
Figure 12-20 shows these possibilities IIS1 would be used internally as an intranet server IIS2 could be used as an extranet web server requiring authentication, while IIS3 could be used as an Internet web server using anonymous access

Notification Services
Notification Services is a set of services that allow users to subscribe to events, and when the event occurs they are notified Notification Services was available in a postrelease version of SQL Server 2000, but is fully integrated in SQL Server 2005 As a simple example, a subscriber may want to be notified when a specific stock price goes above $5000 The subscriber subscribes to the event, and when the event occurs, the subscriber is notified via a notification channel
MCITP SQL Server 2005 Database Developer All-in-One Exam Guide
Multiple delivery methods of notification exist depending on what notification channels are configured These include: E-mail Short Message Service (SMS), commonly used with personal digital assistants (PDAs) Instant messaging NET Alerts, using a custom delivery channel File The bulk of programming Notification Services occurs within a NET application such as C# or Visual Basic As a matter of fact, all of the sample applications are Visual Studio solutions with all the different components of Notification Services This is similar to CLR-integrated objects If you remember in 9, we created a CLR-integrated stored procedure First, we created a DLL assembly This was a simple Visual Basic file that we compiled from the command line but which could have been much more complex Once it was created, we then integrated the DLL assembly into SQL Server 2005, and afterward created a stored procedure to use it For Notification Services, we create and compile the application in Visual Studio (or using another development tool) The SQL Server 2005 samples include many sample applications for Notification Services and other services Next, we create a Notification Services instance in SQL Server 2005 and configure it to point to the compiled NET application Lastly, we run the application In this section, we ll use exercises to explore one of these samples from beginning to end Before we get too far into Notification Services, let s identify some key terms:
Event An action that occurs and affects the specified data In our previous example, the event occurs when the stock price exceeds $5000 Subscriber A user that wants to be notified when a specific event occurs Subscription Created by a subscriber Specifies what the user wants to be notified about, such as when the stock price exceeds $5000 Notification Generated by Notification Services This is the actual message that is delivered to the subscriber Event provider An event provider collects event data and submits it to Notification Services Notification Services comes with standard event providers that can be used with applications, or specialized event providers can be created Generator The generator matches events with subscribers and subscriptions Notifications are then passed to the distributor This is identified as the name of SQL Server 2005 server
