Joins
Pulling data from one table at a time can only get us so far At some point, we need to start pulling data from one or more tables In previous chapters, we covered how we use a PRIMARY KEY (PK) and a FOREIGN KEY (FK) to create relationships between tables Now we discuss how to use those relationships to pull data from multiple tables simultaneously
4: Transact-SQL
To join two tables, we use the ON statement to identify the PK and FK that hold the relationship The types of joins that SQL Server supports are listed in Table 4-4

Retrieves only data that exists in both tables based on the joined field Retrieves all data in the left table, and only data that exists in the right table based on the joined field Retrieves all data in the right table, and only data that exists in the left table based on the joined field Retrieves all data in both tables Creates a Cartesian product of the tables Used to create sample databases with large volumes of data without too much effort Joining a table to itself This is sometimes required when retrieving data from a table that references the table (such as ManagerID of an Employee who is also in the Employee table as EmployeeID)

Inner Joins
First, we ll look at a simple query that joins two tables The ProductionProduct table holds details on the ProductID such as the product name, product number, and ModelID The ProductionProductModel table holds details on the ModelID such as the Model Name If we want a listing of products including the Model Name, we have to join the two tables The following script first shows us what is in both tables, but without using the existing relationship In reality, without connecting the two tables with a join, the two result sets aren t very useful

Since the ProductionProduct and ProductionProductModel tables are related (on the ProductModelID column), they can be joined on the ProductModelID, as shown in the following example This is the PK in the ProductModel table and is an FK in the Product table To join the two tables in a SELECT statement, we could use the following script:
