In order for a helper to demonstrate how to do something, the person being assisted must grant permission for the helper to take control of the user s desktop The helper would click the Request Control button to request to take control of the user s desktop Immediately after the button is clicked, the user is prompted to allow the helper to take control Figure 7-7 shows the prompt Notice the user can click the check box to allow the helper to respond to User Account Control prompts, but this isn t selected by default Additionally, if the user clicks No, than the helper is unable to take control of the user s desktop At any point after control is granted, the user can change his mind The user can press the ESC key or click the Stop Sharing button to immediately stop sharing his desktop Additionally, the user can also click the Disconnect button at any time to disconnect from the remote session At this point, the helper can start moving the mouse within the remote desktop pane of the Remote Assistance window All of the mouse movements and keyboard entries can be viewed by the user requesting assistance If the helper and the user are talking over the phone, the helper can demonstrate the actions while telling the user what she is doing

It s also possible for a helper to send a file to the user requesting assistance The helper clicks the Send a File button, browses to the file she wants to send, and clicks Send File The person is then prompted that the helper wants to send a file and asked if he wants to accept it If the user clicks Yes, he is prompted to save it with the Save As dialog box If the user ever wants to hide his desktop from the helper, he can click the Pause button For example, imagine you were helping me I receive an e-mail that I need to answer right away but I don t want you to see the contents of the e-mail I could press the Pause button to hide my screen from you EXAM TIP The user can hide the screen from the helper by clicking the Pause button This is useful if the user needs to do something he doesn t want the helper to see, but he also doesn t want to completely close the Remote Assistance connection After the Pause button is pressed, the helper only sees a black screen Even if she is granted control, she can no longer see what is on the screen By pressing the Continue button (it appears where the Pause button was), the user again enables the helper to see the screen If the helper previously had control of the desktop, control would immediately be granted again
