Available Printer Drivers One of the challenges with any new operating system is the availability of drivers In a perfect world every hardware vendor will write drivers for every piece of hardware they have before the operating system is released As a user, you could easily plug in your device and it would automatically work Alas It s not a perfect world One of the common complaints with Windows Vista early in its release was the lack of available drivers especially the lack of available printer drivers The problem was twofold First, drivers weren t submitted to Microsoft for testing and weren t available from Windows Update This prevented drivers from being automatically downloaded and installed when you plugged your printer in to your system Second, many manufacturers hadn t yet developed printer drivers, so they weren t even available (or were sometimes buggy) when you found them on the manufacturer s Web site When I first installed Windows Vista (in the beta stages), I simply wasn t able print directly from my Windows Vista system I spent a lot of time trying to find and experiment with different drivers but only succeeded in spending a lot of time on the task No success Today, I plugged in my HP OfficeJet 6100 printer into my Windows Vista system and it automatically detected the printer and downloaded and installed the driver In less than a minute, I had printed a test document to the printer
In Exercise 83, you will share a printer that is installed on your system You can use these steps to share any printer on your system Exercise 83: Sharing a Printer 1 Launch the Printers applet by clicking Start | Control Panel In the Control Panel, select Hardware and Sound | Printers 2 Select your printer Right-click your printer and select Sharing The properties of the printer will appear with the Sharing tab selected 3 Click Change Sharing Options If the User Account Control dialog box appears, click Continue 4 On the Sharing page, select the check box to Share This Printer Select the check box to Render Print Jobs on Client Computers Your display will look similar to Figure 8-10
In the figure, you can see from the note at the top of the page that the Password Protected Sharing option is set to Off It indicates that if you share the printer, any user on the network can print to it If the Password Protected Sharing were set to On, it would indicate that only users with a username and password on your computer can print to this printer from the network
