User State Migration Tool
The User State Migration Tool (USMT) is similar to the Windows Easy Transfer tool in that it helps to transfer users data and settings While the Windows Easy Transfer tool is designed specifically to be used by home users, USMT is designed to be used by corporate support personnel in a network USMT has two primary commands that are run: ScanState and LoadState ScanState collects the information from the source computer, and LoadState restores the information to the destination computer Both ScanState and LoadState are command-line tools Figure 1-9 shows the process of running LoadState and ScanState Notice that a network server is accessible by both the source computer and the destination computer
Figure 1-9 USMT process
Source Computer Destination Computer
ScanState captures settings and data
LoadState restores settings and data
Network Server
These commands don t have to run right after each other You could run ScanState on Saturday to capture the data and settings from a computer Then on Sunday, you could replace the computer and run LoadState to complete the migration Additionally, the command don t have to be run on different computers If a single computer develops significant problems, you can do a wipe and load Capture the data and settings with ScanState, completely reload the system, and then restore the data and settings with LoadState Migration XML files can be used to modify what data to capture and restore If the XML files are omitted, the default data and settings will be captured and restored
