Group policy is a powerful tool used to manage users and computers in a domain, just as local group policy can be used to enforce policy settings on local computers If you re working as a desktop support technician in an enterprise, you definitely need to have at least a basic understanding of group policy You ll learn how group policy is applied, view many of the settings used to manage users and computers, and have an opportunity to access some of the group policy tools in this chapter Remember, though, the goal of this chapter is just to give you some exposure to group policy, not make you an expert Certificates are used for authentication and encryption You most often come into contact with certificates on the Internet, but they re also used internally The topics in this chapter only apply to what you ll see as an Enterprise Support Technician These topics are a little more advanced than you ll find on the two other Vista exams, so if you re not currently studying for the 70-622 exam, you may want to leave this chapter for later EXAM TIP Objectives for only the 70-622 exam are included in this chapter

The magic of group policy is that you can set a single setting and have it apply to many computers It doesn t matter if your domain has 50, 500, 5000, or more computers A single setting of group policy can easily apply to all of the computers Group policy is mysterious because it can do so much There are literally hundreds of possible settings in group policy, such as security, locking down the desktop, and much, much more While you ll learn some of what group policy can do in this chapter, it s important to realize that we are just scratching the surface If you continue your studies and become a system engineer or system administrator, you ll learn much more about its capabilities When preparing for the 70-622 exam, you need to have a good grasp of how group policy can be used to manage Windows Vista systems in both a domain environment and a workgroup environment A domain environment includes a domain controller (running Active Directory) Both computer and user accounts (called objects in Active Directory) are managed centrally on the domain controller Users have one account that can be used to access any computer in the domain Workgroups are used in smaller environments of fewer than 20 computers User accounts are maintained on each individual computer, and users need a separate account for each computer they access Most of the individual group policy settings explored in this chapter can be used in both domain and workgroup environments The difference is that when you use group policy in the domain, you only need to set it once to have it apply to many computers When you use it in a workgroup, you must configure it individually on each computer

On the surface the computer and user nodes look the same they both have the same three folders However, as soon as you start clicking any of the folders and exploring the different settings that apply to users and computers, you ll see that while some settings are the same, many settings are very different It is possible to have a single group policy object (GPO) with configuration settings in both the user and computer nodes If a GPO that includes settings in both nodes is applied to a computer, all of the settings will apply to the computer and to any user that logs on to that computer Similarly, if a GPO that includes settings in both nodes is applied to a user, all of the settings will apply to the user no matter what computer the user logs on to Consider Figure 10-2 It represents a domain named mcitpsuccesscom with three organizational units (OUs) named HR, Sales, and Library The HR OU doesn t have any GPOs applied, but the Sales OU has a single GPO applied with a single setting in the User Configuration node turning off the Windows Sidebar The Library OU also has a single GPO applied with a single setting in the Computer Configuration node turning off the Windows Sidebar
