In Exercise 101 you ll see how to set group policy to turn off the Windows Sidebar setting for either the user configuration or the computer configuration of group policy If you set both settings to Enabled, there is no conflict The Windows Sidebar will be turned off However, if you set one setting to Enabled and the other setting to Disabled, there is a conflict The setting that takes precedence is the last one applied (though you ll see later how you can modify this default behavior using loopback processing) The computer starts first and then the user logs on last (after the computer starts), so the last setting applied would be the user setting In other words, if there is a conflict between the setting applied to the computer and the setting applied to the user, the user setting will take precedence Table 10-2 shows the effects of different settings

Notice that when the computer setting is enabled and the user setting is disabled, the Sidebar isn t necessarily turned off or on Control passes back to the user The user can choose whether or not to have the Windows Sidebar running When a group policy setting is applied, the choice is taken away from the user Multiple settings can coexist without any conflicts For example, a group policy setting applying to a computer may prevent device installations, and another group policy setting applying to a user may turn off the Windows Sidebar There is no conflict, and both settings will apply
Loopback Processing
Loopback processing allows you to alter the order of how group policy is applied Instead of group policies applying to the user taking precedence, loopback processing causes group policies applied to the computer to take precedence

It s easy to understand loopback processing if you first have a solid grasp of how group policy is applied normally I ll do a quick review here EXAM TIP To have the group policy settings that apply to a computer take precedence over the group policy settings that apply to a user logged on to that computer, use loopback processing When a user logs on to a computer and conflicting policy settings exist that apply to both the user and the computer, the policy applying to the user takes precedence The easiest way to remember this is the last policy applied takes precedence Consider the following scenario:
MCITP1 is a computer in the Library OU Sally is in the IT OU The Library OU has a GPO named Turn Off Sidebar The Turn Off Sidebar setting is set to Enabled, preventing the Sidebar from running on the computer The IT OU has a GPO named Disable Turn Off Sidebar The Turn Off Sidebar setting is set to Disabled, overriding an Enabled setting
