Recovering from Error 80070002 or 80070003
Two known Windows Update errors are error 80070002 and 80070003 It s possible for files to become corrupt within the temporary update folder and the Windows Update service will be unable to continue The DataStore folder is within the SoftwareDistribution folder It s referred to as a temporary update folder, and if you experience one of these errors, you can delete all the files in the folder The overall steps to recover from this error are 1 Stop the Windows Update service You can do this from the Services applet 2 Browse to the \SoftwareDistribution\DataStore folder with Windows Explorer 3 Delete all the files within this folder 4 Restart the Windows Update service NOTE For more information on this error, check out Knowledge Base article 910336You can find this by typing in KB 910336 in your favorite search engine If you try to resolve problems with Windows Update by deleting the contents of the DataStore folder but the problems remain, you can take more drastic steps Specifically, you can change the name of the SoftwareDistribution folder When Windows Update starts, it ll see the folder is missing and rebuild it from scratch

It just may be my paranoia, but I don t recommend deleting this folder entirely, but instead just renaming it You may want to review the ReportingEventslog or other folders at some later date The overall steps to rename this folder are 1 Stop the Windows Update service You can do this from the Services applet 2 Browse to the \SoftwareDistribution\DataStore folder with Windows Explorer 3 Rename the folder to SoftwareDisbutionOld 4 Restart the Windows Update service
Reviewing reportingeventslog
Earlier in this section you learned about viewing the update history You can also view reportingeventslog in the %windir%\softwaredistribution folder This log includes detailed information on all the updates for your system Just as the Update History page includes both successful and failed updates, reportingeventslog also includes both However, this log file includes much more detailed information on the failure It includes the date, the time, the error number, and a phrase on what the problem was Of course, it also includes detailed information on all the successful updates EXAM TIP You can check either reportingeventslog or the Update History page to verify if updates have been installed on a Windows Vista system
