13: Configuring Internet Applications
The Enable Protected Mode check box is designed to make it more difficult for malware to be installed on your computer Protected mode is enabled by default on all zones except for the Trusted Sites zone The status bar at the bottom of Internet Explorer indicates what zone you are in and the status of Protected mode (on or off) You can see in Figure 13-10 that the zone is Internet and the status is Protected Mode: On

The Protected mode limits the access that Web sites that have to your computer If a Web page tries to install software or run applications, Protected mode will stop the action and give you a chance to approve or disapprove the action When the warning appears, you can click a check box to allow the Web site to run the program EXAM TIP Protected mode is used to protect your system It prevents malicious Web sites from installing or running malicious software by limiting the access If you trust a program being launched from a Web site and want to allow it to run, you can select the Always Allow Web Sites to Use This Program to Open Web Content check box on the warning dialog box Four zones exist Each of the zones has default security levels where several settings are configured based on the security risk of the zone Each zone has a default security level Except for the restricted sites zone, you can modify the security levels of the zone to meet your needs Additionally, Protected mode can be enabled or disabled on each of the zones EXAM TIP Microsoft generalizes the zone settings as High, Medium-High, Medium, Medium-Low, and Low High provides the strictest environment with the highest security, whereas Low provides the least security However, you should be aware that you can modify any of the underlying settings of each the zones and configure a custom level
